R|E|D|S - Sign of Four
by C. Michael Bailey, AllAboutJazz.com

R|E|D|S is a quartet made up of an American expatriate and three Danes: baritone saxophonist Ed Epstein, guitarist Bjarne Roupe, bassist Goran Schelin and drummer Dennis Drud. Epstein and Roupe are close friends, and the saxophonist wanted a vehicle in which to collaborate with the guitarist. With this exegesis, the quartet was born.

The baritone saxophone makes for a challenging combo leader, in much the same way a football defensive back... read more

David Friesen Circle 3 Trio - Where the Light Falls
by Mark Klafter, Amazon

At the ripe age of 72 David Friesen has achieved a major breakthrough with Where the Light Falls. He is an artist who has labored intensely and compassionately for a lifetime in the jazz harvest, inspiring and teaching many the joys of music, and he is reaping his bounty now. Joined by his Circle 3 Trio mates Greg Goebel on piano and Charlie Doggett on drums with guitarist Larry Koonse on several tracks, Mr. Friesen has been set free to compose... read more

Shawn Purcell - 180
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Tensile toned guitarist Shawn Purcell creates a sophisticated organ combo with Pat Bianchi/B3, Jason Tiemann/dr and a couple guests that sounds like a summit meeting between the sophisticatedly bopping Pat Martino and explorative Larry Young. The advanced harmonics and pulses get intricate on the clever "Cat and Mouse" while Tiemann rumbles around in the magma on "180". There's fire in the frets on "Search and Destroy" and the team gets chunky... read more

Hadley Caliman - Gratitude
by George Fendel, Platter Chatter

Seattle resident, Hadley Caliman actually got his start gigging on LA's Central Avenue with the likes of Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon and Gerald Wilson, among numerous others. At some point, he was influenced by the sound of John Coltrane, and it's the Coltrane thing which you can hear in the high energy opener, "Back For More," and on many other selections as well. For this recording Caliman chooses to work with a rather unusually constructed... read more

Oscar Hernandez & Alma Libre - Love the Moment
by Vicente Toledo Rohena, El Expresso (Puerto Rico)

The pianist, composer, arranger and orchestra conductor based in California, Oscar Hernández, returns to the musical environment with the production 'Love the moment', an album that he presents with his quintet composed by Oskar Cartaya (bass), Justo Almario (saxophone and flute), Jimmy Branly (drums) and Christian Moraga (percussion). In addition, it has guest musicians Gilbert Castellanos (trumpet) and Dayren Santamar'a (violin).

Mimi Fox - This Bird Still Flies
by Mike Joyce, JazzTimes

Nothing humbles a jazz guitarist accustomed to playing a solidbody or archtop instrument quite like an acoustic flattop, even if it's a top-tier Taylor cutaway. There are, of course, musicians who can switch-hit with deceptive ease—Pat Metheny, for one—and now the same can be said of Mimi Fox with the release of this, her first full-length acoustic outing.

It's a dazzler from start to finish, a resonant mix of pop, jazz, blues, funk, and... read more

Jessica Williams - With Love
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

One of the magical things about Williams in performance is that she has the ability to take songs that countless piano bar players have beaten into the ground in various pummelings and make them sound fresh, new and distinct. With a set card here of almost all chestnuts that have been beaten to death in a million piano bars, Williams is playing just for you and like a grand master. Williams is one of those players that proves that she doesn't... read more

Roxy Coss - Restless Idealism
by Bob Weinberg, JAZZIZ

Plaudits and plum assignments are nothing new to saxophonist Roxy Coss. The New York City-based musician, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from William Paterson University in 2008, has earned coveted space with the Mingus Big Band and The Diva Jazz Orchestra and was a member in good standing of trumpeter Jeremy Pelt's group. Fronting her own band, she held down a weekly residency at Smoke for a couple of years. None of this escaped the notice of... read more
