Grupo Los Santos - Clave Heart
by Nelson Rodriguez, Herencia Latina

Grupo Los Santos hails from New York, and began as a quartet back in 1998 in what we can best be described as a rumba jazz act. Finally, debuted their 2000 released "Noches En El Taller" (on 104th & Broadway), where guitarist Pete Smith, drummer William Bausch, saxophonist Paul Carlon and bassist Nicolas Walker performed regularly. Soon after, David Ambrosio came in as bassist, and in 2007 became part of the CD project "Lo Que Somos Lo Que Sea"... read more

Ben Paterson - Breathing Space
by Ron Bierman, Jazz Review

This is a solid, straight-ahead piano trio in a well-chosen program. They play two originals and seven fine, but far from overworked standards. The arrangements are fresh sounding. The playing ranges from gently appealing on the old pop standard "I wish I Knew" to hard driving on Gigi Gryce's "Hymn of the Orient." These Chicago-based musicians are young, yet already in demand as sidemen for club dates and recording sessions. Ben Paterson is... read more

Danny Green - Altered Narratives
by Editor, Love London Love Culture

On this fourth album from Danny Green, the music is lighthearted and playful throughout adding a glimmer of sunshine to the listener's life. This album is not simply a celebration of jazz music but also music of the classical genre, which delicately flows through all of the songs on the record. Danny Green, Justin Grinnell and Julien Cantelm have managed to create a lighthearted collection of songs that is consistent in the quality of... read more

Ted Piltzecker - Vibes on a Breath
by Rick Anderson, CD Hotlist

The latest recording by vibraphonist Ted Piltzecker as a leader is also his first outing with a larger ensemble. This septet includes trumpeter Brad Goode and tenor saxophonist/bass clarinetist John Gunther (who gets a lot of featured time in these arrangements), and the group operates nimbly in the space between a medium-sized combo and a small jazz orchestra. The program is filled with fun and sometimes slightly odd choices: for example,... read more

Kyle Asche Organ Trio - The Hook Up
by Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

Chicago-based guitarist Kyle Asche, a finalist in the 2005 Thelonius Monk Competition, honors the classic Hammond B-3 organ trio tradition while updating it with his own modern aesthetic. That balancing act is best achieved on the uptempo "For Those That Are There," which burns in an old-school manner while pushing the envelope harmonically, and also on the swinging "Hide Inside," which features a potent tenor-sax solo from guest Scott Burns.... read more

Phil Parisot - Creekside
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Drummer Phil Parisot leads a vintage sounding post bop team of Tatum Greenblatt/tp, Steve Treseler/ts, Dan Kramlich/p and Michael Glynn/b through a decalogue of rich originals. His drums snap to the Horace Silver meeting New Orleans groove of "Emerald Crescent" while going kinetic with Kramlich on the crisp "Disruption." His brushes mingle with Glynn's suave bass on "Azalea" and the languid "Earth Tones," with Treseler's beefy tenor and... read more

Daniel Jamieson's Danjam Orchestra - Sudden Appearance
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

Big band fans can rejoice as this youngster was influenced by the Boss Brass and took the lesson's he learned listening to Rob McConnell to heart. With a lightly progressive edge, Jamieson leads his crew of hitters through a solid program that sounds like it came from an accomplished pro. A solid set to open jaded ears, Jamieson will easily hold court as long as he likes and this sudden appearance is certainly an auspicious debut. Check it out.... read more

Ben Winkelman - Heartbeat
by Ed Sapiega, Jazz Views (UK)

Ben Winkelman is a New York-based jazz pianist and composer whose music has been described by Downbeat as "one big, interconnected thing of beauty".

This is his sixth album and is the first with a quartet. The diverse group of Winkelman composed songs consisting of four songs for the trio and five songs for the quartet.

Winkelman had recorded five trio albums and felt that a bit of variety from the quartet "...would be a pleasant... read more
