This is one hell of a creative family. The music spills out of them. Please drink some of it.
Through a unique musical bond, Bug's five musicians have managed to retain a tight rapport in spite of being spread throughout the U.S. Featuring brothers, guitarist Jeff and pianist James Miley, they present their driving and sometimes twisted melodic sense with a quintet including saxophonist Peter Epstein, bassist Roger Shew and Brian Hamada on drums. On GADfly, Bug explores an original set of music showcasing the unit as a tight band, with chops and musicality to spare. From the intertwining melodies of "Invernessence" to the auspicious lines of "Wishful Thinking," Bug digs deep into the modern jazz tradition with a forward-looking vision, taking listeners for a ride the entire way.

Bug are built around the talents of a handful of players, initially from the Los Angeles area, who have taken on elements of the West Coast sound but incorporate elements of their own structures, their own styles, and their new regions into their sound. More than that, though, this quintet draws on the individual talents of its members to form a se ...
Audiophile Audition (Jan P. Dennis)
Multi-reed master Peter Epstein (exclusively on alto sax here), who conceptualized and brought to life one of the great discs of the new century, The Invisible, anchors a very attractive jazz-rock group featuring the Miley brothers, Jeff and James. Long, loping melodic lines, intuitive ensemble interaction, striking soling, and gorgeous colorations ...
Jazz Times (Bill Milkowski)
Thoughtful, provocative fare by a tight quintet of alto saxophonist Peter Epstein, guitarist Jeff Miley, keyboardist and principal composer James Miley, bassist Roger Shew and drummer Brian Hamada. They stride into the alt-jazz camp on spiky numbers like "Gadfly," "The Ballad of Ned Flanders" and the hard-hitting "Dark Matter." The buoyant "Wishf ...
