A welcome quartet recording. Jon is so effective as the harmony player and has an approach very different to most other guitarists. Saxophonist Zilber comments on John's virtues..."depth, beauty, complexity, lyricism and masterful originality." Great quartet, the bass and drums a real stand out. "Kayak" is a great Kenny Wheeler tune with medium tempo swinging solo by all. Track 2 is a waltz treatment of Dizzy's "Con Alma." "Wabash" is one of Scofield's great tunes, nice processing on guitar, but never overdone! "Cold Rain Warm Heart" is a feature for Zilber's soprano while track 10 "Tender" is a short solo tenor feature. "The Beatles" is another Scofield tune with fine solos guitar, soprano and bass. "Quantum Theory" by bassist John Shifflett is a latin tune featuring soprano and drums at the start, and creative guitar solo. "Lost and Found" is a guitar and tenor duo with quotes of "If I Should Lose You." The title tune "Shot Through With Beauty" is a Zilber bossa featuring longer more developed solos by tenor and guitar. "In the Park" is by drummer Jason Lewis with effective solos from bass, guitar and tenor.
