Twopool is an experimental quartet led by cellist/bassist Jonas Tauber with fellow Swiss musicians Andreas Tschopp on trombone, alto saxophonist Andrea Oswald and drummer Christian Wolfarth. Their disc Traffic Bins, part of Origin Records' Zrich Series, consists of thirteen tracks of completely improvised musical conversations.
Amid the clang and clatter emerge sensible developments of theme and rhythm, basking momentarily in thick tension before retreating into sparse melancholy. The deliberate commotion and quirkiness of "Traffic" stands in contrast to the eerie harmonic consequences of "Kitchen Kung Fu" and the chamber music qualities of "Elegy." Tschopp's trombone playing is exceptionally adventurous, displaying technical mastery in an unconventional manner, especially on the frantic "Flyswat" and range stretching "Migraine."
A compatible crew of participants, all good natured risk-takers, makes Twopool a most unique ensemble worth checking out.
