University faculty don't just write textbooks. Some of them are producing their own CDs.
The Toby Koenigsberg Trio, featuring three University Jazz Studies Department faculty members, will celebrate the release of its new album tonight at the Luna jazz club. Toby Koenigsberg on the piano, Tyler Abbott on the bass and Jason Palmer on drums will play several songs from their new CD, as well as pieces by New York City-based jazz composer Andr... read more
Sometimes success is a by product of simple chemistry. The members of drummer ScottNeumann's Neu3 Trio don't boast the largest profiles in jazz. Neither do they arrive with lofty concepts about the way the music should change. Indeed, Blessed makes its mark by betting the farm on two of jazz's bedrock elements: grace and rigor. Neumannenlists saxophonist Michael Blake and bassist Mark Helias for this date, and the loose-limbed trio... read more
Trumpeter Thomas Marriott has always been one of the brightest stars in the Origin Records stables, and his Human Spirit album wanders through extremities of both speed and composition before it's through. This is a rare album that showcases all of the players at their highest levels, in both solo formats and intertwined. Marriott and saxophonist Mark Taylor (who appears in many combination with Marriott) mingle their lines regularly, playing... read more

We're always jingoistic enough to champion one of our locals and Broom once again makes it all too easy. Coming live and direct from Pete Miller's Evanston location, the years of making that his home base makes for this to be a comfortable outing that cooks. The kind of stuff that makes upscale stake and scotch taste even better as it percolates in the background, Broom and company carry on the tradition of killer, first class club jazz that... read more
The arranging is a star feature on this album as well, though in this case the ten-piece ensemble is led by guitarist/composer Tom Rizzo. (The arranger is trombonist Nick Lane, who also plays on the session.) The program consists of a few originals but focuses on standards like "So In Love" and Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes," with a few curveballs thrown in: a slightly noirish version of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City," a swamp-funk... read more
