Noted composer and pianist Richard Sussman reunites with his quintet from the 1970s for Continuum, a dynamic set of multi-genre instrumental jazz. Drummer Jeff Williams, bassist Mike Richmond, tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi and trumpeter Randy Brecker, who replaces Tom Harrell from the original quintet line-up, accompany Sussman through eight of his original pieces and covers of "Alone Together" and "Theme for Ernie." Guitarist Mike stern makes an electrifying guest appearance on "Mike's Blues."
Sussman's clever themes and tight harmonies utilize the trumpet/saxophone front line with great clarity. Both Brecker and Bergonzi deliver inspired solos, especially on the easy swing tempo of "Spare Change" and the more frenetic "Crossroads." The two take full advantage of the composer's challenging, yet musician friendly approach. Sussman demonstrates a graceful approach to the piano on his solo piece "The Wayfarer" and digs in hard on the title track.
