4 1/2 STARS American drummer and vibraphonist (Michael Waldrop) debuts in the role of bandleader. And, what a debut! Musically having to his credit a doctorate at the University of North Texas, where he was a member of the famed One O'Clock Lab Band. Another 10 years spent at a sideman for Jack Cooper in his Jazz Orchestra of the Delta in Memphis. The last decade he has also worked on the faculty for Eastern Washington University. Well accepted in the U.S. (rave reviews in The Jazz Reader, All About Jazz, DownBeat, Jazz Weekly, Jazz Journal), the album "Time Within Itself" is praised by reviewers on the basis of perfectionism, culture, style, atmosphere, and artistic taste; and in the foreground the arrangements are given the same positive assessment. Bill Milkowski, Down Beat reviewer wrote "...this auspicious debut bristles with a visceral post-Weather Report energy that brings big bands into new light." It's hard not to agree with this opinion.

A close to 20-strong team of experienced instrumentalists create the impression of a perfect balance between notated music and freedom in the recording. "Time Within Itself" owes its success in large extent to the great arrangements written by Jack Cooper, one of today's best jazz arrangers in the United States; especially in layering of orchestration Cooper displays this masterfully. Jazz fans interested in the energy created by the music, there are many awe-inspiring moments. It seems that the artistic credo of the Michael Waldrop Big Band is sounding traditional, but through a contemporary point of view.

"Time Within Itself" deals with dialogue in the jazz tradition with many references to the past. Here you can also find also a kind of synthesis, the graduated design of old and new big band all on the basis of extended form contemporary jazz, based on achievements of modern jazz. The four compositions by Michael and Jack Cooper included in the disc may not designate new horizons, but offer many interesting suggestions that will surely hit on fertile ground in future collaborations.

Original text:

Amerykański perkusista i wibrafonista debiutuje w roli bandleadera. I cóż to za debiut! Muzyk, mający na swoim koncie doktorat na University of North Texas, gdzie był członkiem słynnego One O'Clock Lab Band. Kolejne 10 lat spędził u boku Jacka Coopera w jego Jazz Orchestra of the Delta z Memphis. Ostatnia dekada to także praca wykładowcy na Eastern Washington University.

Doskonale przyjęta w USA (entuzjastyczne recenzje w The Jazz Reader, All About Jazz, DownBeat, Jazz Weekly, Jazz Journal) płyta "Time Within Itself" zarówno w warstwie wykonawczej, gdzie perfekcjonizm, kultura, styl, klimat i smak artystyczny przynosi satysfakcję, tak i w planie formalnych rozwiązań aranżacyjnych budzi same pozytywne oceny. Bill Milkowski, recenzent DownBeat napisał "Przemyślany, prosto z trzewi debiut, napędzany post-Weather Report energią, która wynosi big band w inny, lepszy wymiar".
Trudno nie zgodzić się z tą opinią. Blisko 20-osobowy zespół wytrawnych instrumentalistów potrafi stworzyć wrażenie idealnej równowagi między zapisem nutowym a swobodą gry. "Time Within Itself" swój sukces zawdzięcza w dużej mierze znakomitym aranżacjom autorstwa Jacka Coopera, jednego z najlepszych obecnie jazzowych aranżerów w USA, szczególnie w warstwie instrumentacji Cooper daje tutaj mistrzowski popis.
