The sax-bass-drum trio is not a rare grouping, mostly with tenor saxophones (Sonny Rollins, Gratitude Trio by Jeroen van Herzeele) but there are exceptions such as the trio Renku by Michaël Attias with alto sax, or this Mamutrio .

This formula "without net" requires a perfect involvement of the rhythmic pair: everyone must be able to be a soloist in his turn. This is the case of Mamutrio.

Along with Jesse Dockx, a 19-year-old drummer trained at the Amsterdam Conservatory, alto saxophonist Lieven Cambré, a member of saxophonist Koen Nys' quintet, and bassist Piet Verbist, formerly with the Jef Neve Trio, and currently with the Bram Weijters/Chad McCullough Quartet, leader of Zygomatik, with Vincent Brijs (bs) & Jeroen van Herzeele (ts), and founder of Ancesthree with Ben Sluijs.

A fine balance between the limpid and fluid sound of the viola, the assurance doubled by a beautiful sonority of the double bass and the ardor of the drums.

In the repertoire, a classic ("You are Too Beautiful" by Rogers & Hart), a composition by Dockx ("To Remember," all delicacy, with a set of brushes), three by Cambré ("Triads," "Night Shift," "Mr Mood's Touch") Piet Verbist, the true pivot of the formation (including this "My Love You," a paraphrase of "I Love You").

Several compositions are introduced by the double bass as "In Peace with Gravity," with an obsessive bass ostinato, "You are Too Beautiful" or "Mr Mood's Touch." The repertoire alternates tempo vivid as on "Triads," with a solid bass line or on "Temperamental," "Night Shift" or "My Love You," with beautiful double bass and drum solos. "Ballast" is more of the ballad register and "Mr Mood's Touch" is built on a waltz rhythm. As for the introduction of "For Less Than Nothing," it shows the fluidity of Lieven Cambré's alto.

A good example of interactivity.

Original:
