Since he left Jef Neve, Belgian contrabassist Piet Verbist got time and space to work out his own ideas. After two shots with his group Zygomatik and one with Mamutrio, this is now his fourth release for the American label Origin. A new beginning also with an acoustic quartet for which he wrote eight pieces.

'Suite Réunion' is a real showcase for Verbist as a bassist, but especially as a composer. The two minutes long solo on the opener 'Mygratum' followed by the eleven minutes 'Asylum' immediately showcase great expertise. It sounds like a real suite, subtly interwoven with refined details above which a slightly exotic perfume floats. After Verbist's intro, drummer Dré Pallemaerts and saxophonist Bart Borremans add careful and clearer contours. The tension arc increased with pianist Bram Weijters completing the picture.

In 'Bright Minor' it is a loose swing and an explicit rhythm pattern that prevails with the saxophonist extending the line radically to the bop era. The others play the game, with material that reminds of the golden age of classic jazz from the sixties with a smaller focus on the bass player. The gentlemen are also patented poets as can be seen from the first part of 'Suite Réunion'. In that same song, with a length of twelve minutes, the step is also taken towards a more modern jazz sound. Now it is Weijters who smoothly indicates the pace while the other three colorize further.

We discover even more late night jazz in 'Hope In Despair'. Characteristic is the warm glow that radiates from this album. That it ends with a title like 'Blues Excuse' is not that strange. A fascinating trip to the original planet jazz with trips to various corners.
