John Bishop's new recording is outstanding. For reference it has the feel of a more aggressive Bill Evans trio, with all the elasticity and interaction that Evans and his trio's were known for. Pianist Bram Weijters, and bassist Piet Verbist are among Europe's best, and this trio gels and swings together as one musical mind and concept. Listen to their collective improvisation on "For Less Than Nothing. The trio is playing mostly original music, with the exception of a Carla Bley composition, a Hal Galper song, and a Henry Mancini tune. And that last phrase might say it all. John Bishop's trio has found a voice somewhere between Henry Mancini and Carla Bley. It's a space where masterful modern piano trios live, Corea, Hancock, Jarrett. Add this trio to the list, congrats to drummer John Bishop, you have put together quite a trio, and an even better recording. In its concept, sound, and playing, Antwerp is a fantastic record.
