This is a very ambitious record and please don't assume that you know what to expect when you see that a guitarist is leading a band with a lot of Latin percussion players. Guitarist, composer, arranger, and producer Bobby Rozario has put together a very special and original project and created some wonderful music. Rozario and Spellbound lean much closer to Mahavishnu than "Black Magic Woman." We all know what Dennis Chambers is capable of, he is a drumming legend, and he sounds great on Spellbound. So you can imagine how strange it is to say that drummer Robby Ameen steals the show on Spellbound, he absolutely kills this music, just listen to "Stronger Together." And according to the liner notes Ameen had a strong hand in the rhythm arrangements as well, I am a huge fan of double drumming (two drummers playing at the same time) and this is a drumming magazine, so I must call special attention to the fact that Dennis Chambers and Robby Ameen are double drumming (with Mauricio Herrera also playing congas) on "Carmen's Lover" and "Beat The Devil." They even trade on both songs. Can you imagine trading with Dennis Chambers? I can't even recall any other examples of Dennis double drumming on another record. Kudos Robby, Dennis and most of all Bobby Rozario!
