Matt Olson - 789 Miles
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

A smoking trio with sax and B3, which way to do you want to take it? With chops galore powering the date, this is the perfect date to put yourself on auto pilot to enjoy to the max. Way more than just a tasty collection of licks and scales, this trio starts out in overdrive and takes it from there. Solid stuff that never lets you... read more

Paul Tynan & Aaron Lington - Bicoastal Collective: Chapter Six
by Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

In jazz terms, trumpeter Paul Tynan and baritone saxophonist Aaron Lington's Bicoastal Collective is a long-running series, as this marks the sixth recording produced during their sixteen-year partnership. As Chapters One to Five were splendid, it might have been advisable to close the book there. However, Tynan and Lington have chosen to forge ahead, and so Chapter Six must be appraised on its own merits.

Before weighing the music, it should... read more

Russell Kranes/Alex Levine/Sam Weber/Jay Sawyer - Anchor Points
by Russell Perry, WTJU-FM

This New York collective performs a set of three originals and five covers as both a classic piano - guitar - bass trio (Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole) and as a quartet with drums. George Harris wrote on Jazz Weekly, "[In a drummerless trio, guitarist Alex] Levine and [bassist Sam] Weber get into a delicate mood on I'll Get By, with the latter stretch out a bit, and for the former to give an aria on a fragrant Two Sleepy People. [In a... read more

Daria - Strawberry Fields Forever
by John Sanders, Jazz Music Archives

A jazz tribute to the Beatles is not unusual, there are many out there, but what is more selective is a tribute that tries to re-shape the Beatles' original music, and does so successfully, and that is what we have in Daria's creative re-structuring of the 'fab four' on her new album, "Strawberry Fields Forever (Songs by the Beatles)". Daria and her crew of San Francisco jazz artists take on several Lennon-McCartney classics, and do so... read more

Rich Pellegrin - Down
by Paul Simpson, The Answer is in the Beat - WCBN, Ann Arbor

Rich Pellegrin's third album for OA2 features the brilliant Seattle duo Bad Luck as well as the Mizzou New Music Ensemble (on the alternate version of the album's title track). Opening piece "Trial" is an instant attention-grabber, filled with complex, stop-on-a-dime arrangements and an overabundant amount of energy. Absolutely fresh and exciting. "Birthright" isn't quite as explosive or colorful, but it's still intense in its own way, slowly... read more

Daria - Strawberry Fields Forever
by Lance Liddle, BeBop Spoken Here (UK)

Am I the only person who prefers many of the Beatles' songs when they're performed by someone else? I gave Kenny Ball's version of When I'm 64 the nod over the original and I like Daria's version even more than that although the gender reversal implied by the lyric does feel strange to an old chauvinist like me!

When I get older losing my hair, or You can knit a sweater sitting by the fire or Doing the garden, digging the weeds etc... I... read more

Chamber 3 - Transatlantic
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

They pride themselves on not being in the same time zone but what I hear is a lot of 60s Detroit/New York leading edge jazz with that vibe that let's you know you better strap yourself in for some wild listening. Tasty stuff throughout, this trio doesn't let time zones or time stand in their way. Left leaning tastes will always welcome this sound and it makes itself known early and often. Check it... read more

Gordon Lee with the Mel Brown Septet - Tuesday Night
by Geoge Fendel, Jazz Society of Oregon

Where there was once bristling, beautiful hard bop, there is now Tylenol, toys and towels; what was once a favorite jazz hang called the Hobbit, is now a Walgreen's. But many remember those nights on SE 39th & Holgate. Among the stars on that stage were Mel Brown, Thara Memory, Warren Rand, Michael York, Tim Gilson and Gordon Lee. Well, most of the names have changed, and the venue is now Jimmy Mak's on Tuesday nights. Gordon Lee is a deep and... read more
