The story of a Harvard-educated Orthodontist giving it all up to become a singular jazz vocalist was enough for an editor at Oprah's "O" Magazine, who immediately got on the phone with our own Gail Pettis.
The result is a one-page feature in the October issue of O, on newsstands now and just in time for the new pressings of Gail's two critically-acclaimed albums - May I Come In? and Here in the Moment.
For the 9th consecutive year, Origin has been nominated for JazzWeek's "Label of the Year" (winning it in 2009), with winners announced during the annual JazzWeek Summit at the San Jose Jazz Festival in August. Sharing the nomination ballot with Blue Note, Highnote, Posi-Tone, Smoke Sessions and Mack Avenue...we couldn't be more proud!
NPR's resident jazz critic, Kevin Whitehead, reviewed and presented music from Dan Cray's new release Outside In on Terry Gross' "Fresh Air" on July 18th, causing it to rocket up to #5 on Amazon's top selling jazz album chart the same day. Radio still works! Check out the broadcast here.
Danny Green reached new creative heights with his latest album, Altered Narratives, which vaulted up the JazzWeek airplay charts soon after release and has been in the National Top 50 for 14 weeks.
Recorded at New York’s famed Sear Sound with master producer Matt Pierson, Danny brought together his five year-old trio, along with a string quartet, to interpret eleven new compositions, each shaped by elements of his life’s narrative.
Keep your eyes posted here throughout the fall for the large and great slate of new recordings coming up the pike, including new music from longtime Origin/OA2 artists: Afro Bop Alliance, Tim Davies Big Band, David Friesen, John Moulder, Clay Giberson, Tom Collier , Clark Sommers, and new artists: Jason Hainsworth, Emi Meyer, Gustavo Cortinas, Mamutrio, Shawn Maxwell, Gwen Dease, and more!
After spending many weeks on the national airplay charts from August 2015 through January 2016, Nick Finzer's The Chase is still high on JazzWeek's 52-week chart, clocking in at #27 over the last year.
Recently back from dates in Australia, he can be seen performing around New York with his groups and the Anat Cohen Tentet.
Also on the JazzWeek Top 100 for the last year are Roxy Coss, Danny Green, and the Ray Vega / Thomas Marriott East-West Trumpet Summit.
David Friesen and Glen Moore, two of the more influential bassists in jazz, recently teamed for a tour through Europe concluding with their 3rd duo recording over the last 40 years. Add the decade between their initial meeting up in Seattle in the '60s before their first recording, 1977's In Concert (Vanguard), and the total time they've been working together comes to 50 years. Named for the two-humped camel native to the steppes of central Asia, Bactrian offers ample new proof that these old friends continue to take great glee in surprising and challenging each other, their listeners, and themselves.
