...a classic jazz singer...a powerful presence...
John Callaway, WTTW-TV Network Chicago, PBS

Long an established performer around Chicago, vocalist Alison Ruble's debut release brings together some of the scene's most forward thinking players for a set of re-envisioned jazz standards and modern pop tunes, arranged and co-produced by guitarist John McLean. Ruble casts her rich alto in a variety of open ended settings that deftly reference classic jazz, even as she stretches the boundaries of The Great American Songbook, including arrangements of "So In Love," "If I Had You," and "Lazy Afternoon," to more modern fare such as the Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me."

Guitarist John ...

CD Hotlist: Baker & Taylor (Michael Bonnard)
A surprising debut! Ruble sounds like a well-seasoned performer with a voice that is uncannily happy and mournful at the same time. She covers standard Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, and Rodgers/Hammerstein material as well as James Taylor. A versatile performer with a great band behind her. Hope for more in the future. Highly recommended. ...

Alison Rble's gemlike voice recalls the crystalline beauty and purity of the young Joni Mitchell. Befitting such a jewel, the settings are equally fine. Guitarist John McLean has fashioned 11 thoughtful arrangements, hitting each tune's core with the skill and precision of an expert marksmen. If only the same could be said of Ruble. Traversing a ...

South Bend Tribune (JACK WALTON)
On her debut album, "This Is a Bird," jazz vocalist Alison Ruble creates an atmosphere where nostalgia and innovation go hand-in-hand. Even the artwork and album title reflect this. Ruble discovered a box of old letters that her mother and grandmother had written to each other, and snippets of the women's handwriting appear on the cover and in t ...
