All About Jazz

411 is new music created by old friends from seemingly disparate musical worlds. From the Canary Islands, Barber moved on to New York City where his mix of stellar classical guitar technique with modern jazz sensibilities has been making waves for several years. Electronic music composer Hugo Cipres remains in Lanzarote, traveling throughout Europe as a DJ, but a DJ strongly influenced by classical and jazz greats. On 411, they create a dynamic hybrid, mixing Barber's sweeping eclecticism with modern European electronica and New York's finest acoustic improvisors - saxophonist Seamus Blake, drummer Ari Hoenig, and bassist Johannes Weidenmueller.

"...a portent of things to come...with all the potential to be a truly original voice in modern music." - All Music Guide

Reviews of 411

Midwest Record (Chris Spector)
Here's one the moldy figs won't be able to handle. A jazzbo guitarist gets together with an electronic dj and rounds out his sound with some first call downtown cats. You call almost hear listeners kvetching the way they did when Eric Dolphy first started being out there. Not really jazz, not really King Crimson or Kraftwerk, it's a trip into th ...

All About Jazz (Dan McClenaghan)
The opening of the decidedly modern music on 411, the track entitled "Timanfaya," sounds like a spooky, welcome to a plugged-in netherworld. It begins with electric surges and wafflings, then glowing beeps punctuating electric washes before a shift into tune two, "all in," that sounds as if the late multiple reedman Eric Dolphy is hanging aroun ...

Bird is the Worm (Dave Sumner)
Guitarist Diego Barber burst onto the scene with the 2009 release Calima, an album with an expansive sound enveloped in a rustic serenity, courtesy of Barber's use of classical guitar in a jazz setting. He continued that sound with the 2011 release The Choice, an album that saw him move from the sounds of wide open spaces and into an environment ...
