...that exciting intersection of small combo creativity and big band momentum which characterizes "little-big band" performance.
ALL ABOUT JAZZ

Through the richly textured arrangements of longtime collaborator Nick Lane and a stellar ensemble of Los Angeles' finest, veteran guitarist and composer Tom Rizzo creates a swinging and wide-ranging recording of interesting standards and provocative originals. From the subtly loose groove of Ornette Coleman's, "Law Years," to the lush orchestration of Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes," or the buoyant swing of Cole Porter's "So In Love," Rizzo's supple guitar lines provide a central voice to a wide array of sonic moods. Along with the quartet of Rizzo, drummer Steve Schaeffer, pianist Dennis Hamm and bassist David Hughes, is a 6-piece horn section featuring saxophonist Bob Sheppard, trumpeter Bob Summers and Nick Lane on trombone.

Reviews of Day and Night

CD Hotlist (Rick Anderson)
The arranging is a star feature on this album as well, though in this case the ten-piece ensemble is led by guitarist/composer Tom Rizzo. (The arranger is trombonist Nick Lane, who also plays on the session.) The program consists of a few originals but focuses on standards like "So In Love" and Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes," with a few curveballs t ...

Midwest Record (Chris Spector )
An ace guitarist that can play with the shimmering lines of Joshua Breakstone or Pat Martino covers songs even though he can write interesting stuff and calls in first call hands to lend a hand because it's obvious he cares. A solid, swinging date that sure to delight jazz guitar fans, everything you could want in a smoking performance is delivere ...

Cadence (Robert Rusch)
Guitarist TOM RIZZO's NIGHT AND DAY [origin 82733] presents a combination of small band [Nick Lane-tbn/arr; John Dickson-fr hn; Bob Summers-tpt; Bob Sheppard-ts; Jeff Driskill-ss; Doug Tornquist-tuba] and quartet [Dennis Hamm-p, David Hughes-b, Steve Schaeffer-drm] groupings which goes down very smoothly. The horns are mainly used as coloring but t ...

All About Jazz (Jack Bowers)
The names in guitarist Tom Rizzo's starting lineup on Day and Night indicate that this is a West Coast-based group, an observation that is borne out in Rizzo's bio, which says he is "active [on] the Los Angeles music scene" and served as guitarist for the Tonight Show band when Jay Leno was at the helm, reinforced by the song "Heart of L.A.," one o ...
