Saxophonist John Wojciechowski's been active on the jazz scene in Chicago for nearly a decade. On hearing this CD, the immediate question is why he has remained under the radar outside of the "Windy City" for so long. The opening track from his second album was an instant hit. Balanced elaborated, saxophone solo in the right place, perfectly dosed with a clear knowledge of the tradition (from swing to bop and beyond), yet with a contemporary approach. Immediately apparent is drummer Dana Hall, someone who likes to color throughout with cymbals. Pianist Ryan Cohen proves that he knows what the 88 keys are for, bassist Dennis Carroll delivers dark subdued tension while Wojciechowski, the composer for this song "Summon Of The Elders," was inspired by Coltrane's "Impressions." There is also a tribute to Monk and Brubeck - "Evidence" and "In Your Own Sweet Way." With the ballad "Elegy" (dedicated to his late father), they show that the four know the rules of the game in this area. The breaking point is perfect at the right time to push it out, growing to an epic story. With Wojciechowski's own words in mind: before you break the rules, you must have learned them thoroughly. Saxofonist John Wojciechowski is al zowat een decennium lang actief in de jazzscene van Chicago. Bij het horen van deze cd stel je onmiddellijk de vraag waarom hij buiten de "windy city" zolang onder de radar bleef. De openingstrack van zijn tweede cd is meteen raak. Evenwichtig uitgewerkt, saxofoonsolo op de juiste plaats, perfect gedoseerd, met een duidelijke kennis van de traditie (van swing tot postbop en verder) en toch met een hedendaagse aanpak. Meteen hierop mag drummer Dana Hall inleiden. Iemand die graag inkleurt met cymbalen. Pianist Ryan Cohen bewijst dat hij weet waar de 88 toetsen voor dienen, bassist Dennis Carroll levert de donkere onderhuidse spanning terwijl componist Wojciechowski zich voor dit nummer Summon Of The Elders liet inspireren door Coltrane's Impressions. Verder is er tevens eerbetoon aan Monk Evidence en Brubeck In Your Own Sweet Way. Met de ballad Elegy (opgedragen aan Wojciechowski zijn overleden vader) laten de vier horen dat ze ook op dit gebied de regels van het spel kennen. Het breekpunt komt perfect op het juiste moment om van daar af het geheel uit te laten groeien tot een episch verhaal. Wojciechowski is over heel de lijn zijn eigen woorden indachtig: voor je de regels breekt, moet je ze eerst grondig geleerd hebben. Hij houdt woord op Focus. En dat hij zowel sopraan-, alt- als tenorsaxofoon speelt, pleit eveneens in zijn voordeel.
