Trumpeter Anthony Stanco's new Stanco's Time features jazz drummer Joe Farnsworth entirely in Billy Higgins and Art Taylor territory, and he proves that this is a territory that he simply owns! Pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and Joe form a swinging rhythm section for this blowing date. Listen to the perfection of Farnsworth's touch and sound as he plays the exchanges in "Stanco's Time" and "Hot House" (and in the perfect closing solo in "Hot House.") His amazing brush playing (and sound) and his bass drum touch, found on the duet of trumpet and drums on "Dig" and the tune "Worth the Time," harkens back to a time when magnificent brush playing and a nice open bass drum sound meant a lot. Joe's playing of the ensembles, his buoyant groove, and his dropping bombs on "Minor Time," make it the best track of the record. The jazz drumming tradition is alive and well in the hands of Joe Farnsworth, and recordings like this prove it.
