The pianist Ben Markley presents a 3rd Big Band effort, where 7 originals and a few arrangements welcome many esteemed players.
The frisky title track opens with Steve Nelson's playful vibes and Terell Stafford's well timed trumpet making an impression, and "JIFE" follows with Steve Kovalcheck's meticulous guitar front and center via the busy and textured delivery.
Moving along, "Snowy Range Blues" benefits from Steve David's skilled trombone across the rich and indeed bluesy mood, while "Old Folks" finds an intimate place to reside thanks to Kyle Swan's restrained drumming and the heartfelt brass.
Getting closer to the end, "'Mon Back" is a lively moment that showcases Gabe Mervine's trumpet and Will Swindler's sax amid much energy, and "Groundwork" exits with Jared Cathey's colorful sax that suits David Wong's quick bass and, of course, Markley's precise keys.
The unparalleled talent present makes for a tremendous listen, where plenty of solos, no lack of melody and handfuls of harmony are much appreciated.
