4-STARS Clarence Penn is one of the most dynamic jazz drummers in the world. But that's not all: Thanks to his versatility and professionalism, he has led numerous bands in the past, composed music for films and commercials, and produced songs for a variety of pop and jazz musicians. His career began in New York in 1991. He toured with greats such as Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Jacky Terrasson, Dizzy Gillespie, Dianne Reeves and Mike Stern. Penn's discography includes no fewer than several hundred studio albums. He had a very special idea for his latest work, "Behind the Voice". He chose one song from each of the different artists who have one thing in common: they are both singers and drummers. Each of these songs, which he then reinterpreted, has its own story, which he tells on the cover. It is special that Penn did not choose the classic "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, which became a worldwide hit thanks to its drum solo. He chose "Why Can't It Wait Till Morning", one of the first pieces of Collins' solo career, which was recorded without any drums. A wonderful, lovingly arranged album that not only lets Clarence Penn shine, but also his top-class fellow musicians.
