New Outlook

It's obvious that these three musicians have an "affinity" for each other and the music they make together. The drumless trio format makes the presentation more intimate, and the extra space in the soundscape makes the performance of familiar material unique. There's no lack of rhythmic drive, though, due to Clay Schaub's propulsive bass and intuitive locking in with Pamela York's piano backing. The program is enjoyable with a distinctive original from each member, a couple of old standards done in fresh ways, and the rest covers of original compositions by jazz greats Thad Jones, Sam Rivers, and Larry Willis, taking you through bop, bossa, and ballad moods. Eric Jacobson's trumpet solos cover the full range of expression, balancing tenderness and agility, always with great tone. Schaub's bass solos are melodic while keeping the rhythmic drive going, and York's piano playing is subtle and stylish, sometimes reserved and sometimes fun and funky. I'm sure catching them live at the Mason Street Grill would be an evening well spent.
