This is a fine big band with the likes of Carl Saunders and Kim Richmond on it and any band with these strong players has a lot to say.
"When You Wish Upon A Star" features Kim Richmond's muscular alto solo which makes this star shine in all its glory, no need to wish upon it.
"People Will Say We're In Love".....Tierney Sutton's sibilance slips swiftly sliding into this tune soon after the vocal starts with a bit of nasal quality added ...Bob McChesney on trombone shows both dexterity and superb ideation in his magnificent solo.
"Smile" Although thin in tone Miss Sutton manages to bring this tune to fruition with a low key approach. Her phrasing leaves a bit to be desired, but on a song of this type, it matters not.
"It's A Small World After All" Carl Saunders (trumpet) comes on like gangbusters at the beginning and continues his rapid fire message in his turn at bat like no other. Saunders' solo is the hallmark of this recording. His trumpet mastery alone is worth the price of the recording. In truth it is a small world trumpetwise when Saunders blows. There are only a handful of trumpeters that can match his artistry, it is dead solid perfect.....
