Trombonist and composer Ben Patterson bops hard on this collection of assertive originals with Shawn Purcell/g, Harry Appelman/key, Miles Brown/b and Todd Harrison/dr. Patterson's 'bone is bold, big and brassy, and he rocks brightly with a plugged in Purcell on the muscular "Unbridled" and digging into Harrison's backbeat on "Oops, Wrong Timeline" and the boogalooing "Stretch". Appelman's Hammond adds to the funk factor on "David and Francis" and his piano sizzles on the post bopping "Or Maybe You Would" that veers around some intense work from Brown and Harrison. Purcell taps into his inner Metallica on "Confidence and Doubt" and the team rocks out on the fusioned "Phrenetic" with the leader sliding harder than Ty Cobb into third.
