The Kim Richmond Ensemble takes chances when performing in a concert hall or club, as much as in the studio. The music is exciting
either way. Recorded in concert with a small audience watching, these sessions provide deep insight into the small band through which
saxophonist Richmond has his say. John Daversa and Joey Sellers give the leader a combination of technical mastery and Avant-Garde expression that merges seamlessly with his well-rounded frame of reference. With his
big bands as well as his smaller ensembles, Richmond has always championed the growth that comes with "modern" Jazz. Bassist Kristin Korb and drummer Erik Klass provide a proper foundation that stretches from classic tradition to the leading edge. Pianist Brian Friedland appears on three tracks; pianist Rich Eames on the others.
Located in Los Angeles' Downtown Arts District, Caf Metropol regularly hosts creative artists rom local communities as well as from afar. The space is small and intimate, the acoustics are well-preserved through carefully-placed tapestries, and artists appearing there know that their audience has come to listen. Richmond and his ensemble benefit on this recording from the venue's immaculate attention to detail. The band's sound stands
out for its clarity and rich timbre. "Invitation," "You Don't Know What Love Is," "The Peacocks," and "Never Let Me Go" bring a smile of recognition, while two Richmond originals and one by Clay Jenkins provide wide-open impressions. Throughout the sessions, the leader pushes from deep within and his musical partners follow suit. This live session comes recommended for its clarity and engaging spirit.
