The founder and leader of Toronto's award-winning Brass Connection through the '80s returns to the studio with his 10-piece big band that's been together since 1993. Produced by Hamilton and Mark Taylor, the band features top players from the US Military Jazz Ensembles. Inspired by the Stan Kenton Orchestra of the '50s and arrangers such as Bill Holman & Mark Taylor, Hamilton didn't pick up the trombone until he was 40 and quickly made up for lost time studying arranging & trombone at night while being the head of surgery at two hospitals during the day.

Most exciting big band disc I've heard this year! I'm not even sure at what point a fairly good-sized ensemble - in this case ten players - officially becomes a big band. But the bottom line here is that Hamilton follows the contrapuntal writing style of arranger Bill Holman, just about the best in the business in my estimation. And thru careful v ...

Doug Hamilton's story is amazing in that he didn?t begin playing trombone until age 40. He was, you see, busy being head of surgery for two hospitals! So it was doctor by day and jazz student by night! I might say, right off the bat, that you?re going to enjoy these well-loved standards in this ensemble setting. From ?By Myself? to ?Up Jumped Spr ...

If you've never heard of Doug Hamilton, there's a good reason; by day he's Dr. Doug Hamilton, head of surgery at two hospitals.
Hamilton didn't seriously pursue jazz until he was 40, when he picked up a trombone and began lessons - and studied arranging - at night. After 10 years, in the 1980's, he founded The Brass Connection: a Juno Award-winn ...
