Guitarist Randy Napoleon's guitar summit of five guitarists is jazz guitar heaven, but it also lets us hear drummer Quincy Davis supporting the guitar focused proceedings. Sometimes when you are supporting different instrumentalists playing the same
instrument it can be easy support them all in the same way. But Davis gives everyone different kinds of support (not to mention the other soloists) and moves the music forward accordingly.
Davis's drumming shines on "The Speckled Frog," "Boom Boom," and on "The Singer." Quincy Davis' broken time on "52 Pickup" is especially strong, and his brush playing on the head of "Riverside Blossoms" is perfect for the tune. Quincy's ballad playing on the super slow "Jo Jo Jo" is impeccable. Davis, bassist Rodney Whittaker, and pianist Rick Roe, make a nice rhythm section, and create a nice vibe for this record.
