Eric is the real deal! A truly world class jazz trumpeter...strong, assured technique, a hip dark sound on the trumpet, and expressive without gimmicks.
Brian Lynch

With a collaborative history going back almost a decade, Milwaukee-based trumpeter Eric Jacobson looked to his friends in Chicago to form the core of his quintet for Discover. Harmonically, rhythmically and soulfully in sync, saxophonist Geof Bradfield, bassist Dennis Carroll, drummer George Fludas, along with the supremely supportive NY pianist Bruce Barth, provide an inspired environment for Jacobson's journey through four new compositions, interspersed with timeless standards. Delightfully intuitive, sympathetic and always swinging, Jacobson's quintet delivers an intriguing set of musical discoveries.

Reviews of Discover

Jazz Weekly (George W Harris)
The future of Blue Note-styled hard bop is in good hands with trumpeter Eric Jacobson along with his snappy quintet of Geof Bradfeld/ts, Bruce Barth/p, Dennis Carroll/b and George Fludas/dr. Jacobson has a sound and feel not dissimilar to Lee Morgan, and the team grooves like a vintage Horace Silver'd outfit on the soulful "New Combinations" featur ...

All About Jazz (Nicholas F. Mondello)
4-STARS With Discover, Milwaukee-based trumpeter and jazz educator Eric Jacobson and team take us on an aural time trip back to the days when album covers were iconically black and white or monochrome and the contents within were drenched in blue-hued Hard Bop. This is a fine effort with that precise presentation. "New Combinations," which laun ...

WDCB (Paul Abella)
Milwaukeean Eric Jacobson has assembled a fantastic band with pianist Bruce Barth and Chicagoans Geof Bradfield (sax), Dennis Carroll (bass) and George Fludas (drums) for an outstanding new release called Discover. Discover is a mix of original material, Jazz classics (Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma") and standards ("I Hear a Rhapsody," "Old Folks"). ...

CirdecSongs (Cedric Hendrix)
Come on in! The club is open for business! Have a seat one of the tables. The cocktail waitress will be with your shortly. Heads are bobbing and feet are tapping thanks to the swinging jazz of the Eric Jacobsen Quintet. The trumpeter is leading his top-shelf band through delightful post-bop changes that sound both fresh and like they are of another ...

All About Jazz (Jack Bowers)
4-STARS If trumpeter Eric Jacobson's name doesn't ring a bell, it could be because he is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, not in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles or any other jazz mecca. What's more, Jacobson has not recorded often; Discover is only his second date as leader or co-leader. Hindrances aside, Jacobson's is a name with which one shou ...

Shepherd Express (Kevin Lynch)
Eric Jacobson blazes. In person, the naturally powerful Milwaukee trumpeter has long conveyed the impression: "I'm gonna cut anybody here, and all comers." That's fueled some willfully dynamic solos. With trumpet poised, his muscular angularity recalls an Italian Futurist sculpture. So, Discover comes as a surprise, perhaps as a self-discovery, tra ...

Take Effect (Tom Haugen)
The trumpet extraordinaire Eric Jacobson is in the company of Geof Bradfield (tenor sax), Bruce Barth (piano), Dennis Carroll (bass) and George Fludas (drums) for these 8 harmonic, rhythmic and meticulous jazz songs. "New Combinations" starts the listen with a frisky pace of warm brass, energetic drums and timeless jazz sensibilities that we co ...
