Laurie Antonioli and Richie Beirach - Varuna
by Grego Applegate Edwards, Gapplegate Music Review

Jazz vocalist Laurie Antonioli seems perfectly matched with the piano subtleties of Richie Beirach in their album Varuna (Origin 82698). Laurie has a superbly vibrant vocal instrument that she puts to beautiful use on this set. Phrasing, tone, pitch control and artistry are out front in the best ways here. Richie Beirach has not been in my ears much in later days (and I have no idea if he has made himself relatively scarce or I have simply... read more

Scenes - Rinnova
by Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

The trio Scenes, consisting of guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop, had been working together for nearly a decade by the time of their second recording session. Johnson and Bishop are very familiar from working with one another in pianist Hal Galper's trio as well, while Stowell is a refreshing change from guitarists who hog the spotlight with busy solos, opting instead to make ample use of space. Johnson... read more

Lucas Pino - No Net Nonet
by Dave Sumner, Bird is the Worm

Nice straight-ahead set from saxophonist Pino. His nonet attains a strong head of steam and doesn't relinquish it. Best is just sitting back and listening to their flight... read more

David Friesen Circle 3 Trio - Interaction
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

David Friesen plays the Hemage bass for the most part and occasionally the piano on this two disc set with saxist Joe Manis and drummers Charlie Doggett or Reuben Bradley. The firstr disc was recorded in Portland, and features nimble interplay between the three. Friesen's warm piano teams well with Manis' soprano on "Soft As Silk" and "Sequence" while his flexible bass gets funky with Manis on tenor on "Interaction" and Doggett in high hat... read more

Brad Wheeler - The Future Was Yesterday
by Rev, The Kurt Elling Forum

Wanting to stock up on as much of Laurence's playing as I could get before his move out to NY, I asked him at the last Mill show if his Catch 35 gig was still going. He recommended that I hit Klas Restaurant in Cicero that Saturday afternoon, as Brad Wheeler had set up a gig there. This was quite the unique experience. Wheeler, as most of you remember, is often on the Tenor for Elling shows and recordings, and has that memorable melody and solo... read more

Maddie Vogler - While We Have Time
by Dorothea Gängel, Jazz'n'More (Switzerland)

Chicago-born saxophonist Maddie Vogler presents nine pieces on her debut album that reflect her exploration of her Cuban roots. Energetic, rhythmic and yet full of melodic gentleness, the original compositions showcase the young musician's great skills. She always gives her five bandmates the opportunity to step into the spotlight. At the forefront is her former teacher and mentor, Tito Carrillo, on the trumpet and flugelhorn. An impressive... read more

Matt Jorgensen +451 - Quiet Silence
by Gordon Todd, Earshot Jazz, August 2001

Drummer Matt Jorgensen need not worry about the pitfall of the sophomore slump with his second release as a leader, Quiet Silence. It contains some of the freshest and most honest playing on any jazz CD this year. Jorgensen and his band, 451, play complex, progressive music but make it sound as natural as breathing.

Unlike some bands led from the drum kit, Jorgensen and 451 showcase the music, not the percussionist. While an imaginative and... read more

Todd Bishop - Little Played Little Bird
by Arion Molina, Sax Sounds Magazine (Spain)

There are many fans of the pioneer of free-jazz, Ornette Coleman. After their wake a few albums in their name have been recorded already. But it's been a long time since the conflicting chords of this enhancing music were heard in a recording studio. The drummer Todd Bishop puts on alert his compatible collaborators, to enter itself in the dark of the melodies of Coleman. Like good fans of the king of free jazz, the components of Todd Bishop's... read more
