Not everyone who reads my reviews know that I got my start in "show business" doing live spoken-word, so Phil's excellent poetry is a total treat for me... it's earned a permanent place on my iPhone (yikes, I'm running outta' space)... Benjamin's hip & silky sax on tunes like "The Unknowable" is what convinced me it had to be there... there are a whole HOST of other players on this fantastic CD, so long a list, in fact, that you'll need to go to... read more
We've been covering Thomas Marriott since his third CD back in 2007. Last June, he showed that he could more than hold his own when matched with Ray Vega in a trumpet fest. He has been featured as a lead sideman on many of his label mate's CDs. His rise as a first choice trumpeter has been steady, almost meteoric.
His latest CD for Origin is Human Spirit, and it is a joy. Adding a Hammond B-3 to the mix with fellow Northwesterner... read more
Portland's very own Kevin Deitz really shines here with the release of Skylines. Kevin has had a wealth of experience playing bass everywhere from touring Broadway productions to the stage with the likes of Mose allison, Art Blakey, Dave Brubeck, Sheena Easton and everyone in between. Equally at home on upright as he is on his 7-string Conklin, Kevin showcases his abilities on both instruments with musicality, style and grace with Skylines.... read more
In their third decade together, the group's Reminiscing In Tempo fortifies their reputation as a vocal ensemble whose musicality matches their ability to reach deeply into the rhythmic heritage that gives jazz its unique place in world culture. I would be surprised if the lead track doesn't grab the most attention, in part because when "Round, Round, Round" debuted as part of the Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out album in 1959, it became... read more
While too early to call Mood Ellington the album Paul Marinaro has been working up to all his life, it is not too early to call it his finest and most completely realized release among his previous albums that include Without a Song (Self Produced, 2013), One Night In Chicago (Self Produced, 2015), Not Quite Yet (Myrtle Records, 2022), The Bowie Project (Origin Records, 2023).
These previous releases had a... read more
This session lead by composer and music director Anthony Branker can be approached one of two ways. Musically, it boasts of a horn section of David Binney/as, Ralph Bowen/ts-ss-fl and Conrad Herwig/tb that is second to none, with Bowers delivering a riveting tenor solo on "Our Dreams." The rhythm section of Renato Thoms/perc, Donald Edwards/dr, Kenny Davis/b and Jim Ridl/key is swinging yet flexible over things like post bop cookers like... read more
4 1/2 STARS "Origin Suite," the new jazz CD by drummer and composer Michael Waldrop, is a dazzling potpourri of diverse musical styles and aesthetics, a bold and ebullient example of how jazz forever revitalizes and remains infinite in its form of expression.
In a review of Waldrop's previous album, his considerable talents were given the following mention:
Waldrop is the indomitable anchor of an ensemble, a master of kinetic... read more
One of my favorite musical lineups is the saxophone-bass-drums trio. It's ideal for open ended musical exploration. It's highly democratic with all the instruments having an equal share in the ensembles, though inevitably the saxophone gets most of the solo space. Yet without a chordal instrument to lock things in, those solos tend to have a conversational quality. And the Seattle based trio of drummer John Bishop, alto saxophonist Rick Mandyck,... read more
