Like Bill Evans? Looking for some nice piano? Keep moving...The Jim Norton Collective moves past the traditional and into a more avant garde base from which to examine the harmonic intent of Evans. While the liner notes may give one the impression this is a big band release, don't be fooled. At times there are large ensemble arrangements which the more subdued approach is sometimes the melodic road less traveled. Jim Norton has a small arsenal... read more
Andrea Brachfeld plays flute and the darker alto flute set to a collection of Brazilian themes dominated by Antonio Jobim. She mixes and matches with Bill O'Connell/p-key, Harvie S-Lincoln Goines/g, Roni Ben-Hur/g, T. Porinho-Jason Tiemann/dr and Chembo Corniel/perc with some boppy pieces like her own "Espaco Aberto" and a relaxed "Triste E Solitaria." Jobim's "Double Rainbow" is a soulful keyboard affair with Brachfeld's flute floating to the... read more
American trumpeter and composer David Weiss has been leading his sextet for almost 25 years. Slightly changing the line-up of the band, he always tries to maintain his own sound and format, which he dazzles with in subsequent recordings. This time, the trumpeter's sextet (Myron Walden on alto saxophone and EJ Strickland on drums, Nicole Glover on tenor saxophone, David Bryant on piano and Eric Wheeler on bass) perform the "Auteur" session.

Multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan spent a good while working around Chicago before leaving for Florida in the early '60s, though he retained a significant fan base in his old hometown. This live recording made in 2010 over four nights at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase is a reunion, featuring vibraphonist Stu Katz, who while in his teens had regularly sat in with Sullivan over a half-century earlier before pursuing a law career. Joining them in the... read more
Jack Kerouac Would've Loved This
Back in the day, '50s beat poets like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Gregory Corso would recite their poems to live jazz. The relationship between jazz and poetry has been diluted in the intervening years but, hell, poetry is meant to be spoken aloud (and trending as more and more jazz albums these days include spoken-word passages). On the brilliant new The Poetry Of Jazz... read more
Thomas Marriott is one of the two first-tier trumpet players to come out of Seattle in the last decade. The other is Cuong Vu. Marriott is the more "inside" of the two, but not by much. Crazy is creatively off-the-wall. It is also a sincerely affectionate tribute. Marriot does not offer bebop versions of Willie Nelson songs but uses them to provoke extravagant acts of the imagination. Some ("Phases & Stages," "You Wouldn't Cross the Street") are... read more
Bassist David Friesen often goes to his secondary instrument—the piano—to add new dimensions in color and texture to his recordings. But completely putting aside his main axe to focus on musing from the bench, as he does on this outing, is a step beyond the norm. Patiently working his fingers around a welcoming Ravenscroft grand, Friesen creates a series of attractive and unostentatious miniatures embodying quietude. Taken together, these... read more
The bassist, composer and engineer Mike Pope has enjoyed a 30+ year career, and here we're treated to originals and covers with an excellent band plus strings.
"Misgivings" opens the 9 track listen with Geoffrey Keezer's firm keys that suit Pope's playful bass and Nate Smith's fluid drums, and "Steeplechase" follows with Roxy Cross' animated sax prowess adding much to the frisky energy of the Charlie Parker tune.
Entering the middle,... read more
