Tito Carrillo - Opening Statement
by Hrayr Attarian, Chicago Jazz Magazine

Trumpeter Tito Carrillo's debut, Opening Statement, is a musically intense record that starts with a bang, with the hard bop "Truth Seeker," a tune that harkens back to 1950s and '60s Blue Note sessions. Carrillo's burnished trumpet is paired with the Geof Bradfield's agile, muscular tenor saxophone creating a classic sound that is enhanced by Dana Hall's propulsive and polyphonic drumming.

Bradfield's ethereal soprano sax with hints of John... read more

Scenes - Along the Way
by Bill Bennett, All About Jazz

The scenes along the way here are generally bucolic ones, awash with that distinctive just after the sundown light celebrated by photographers. It's a contemplative journey?"no hurry, no worry," as the clich goes. The tempos are relaxed, the timbres unfailingly warm. Subtlety is the key word. This amiable, polished music never clamors for your attention; however, a little deep listening will yield many aural delights.

Guitarist John... read more

New Stories - Hope is in the Air
by Joseph Blake, Victoria Times Colonist

Every summer at the Pt. Townsend Jazz Festival, I'm blown away by the brilliance of Seattle's New Stories.

The piano trio featuring Marc Seales and his rhythm team of bassist Doug Miller and drummer John Bishop are joined by New York heavyweights such as Don Sickler and Bobby Porcelli on a recently released tribute to the music of Elmo Hope called Hope Is In The Air (Origin).

Produced by Sickler and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at... read more

Thomas Marriott - Constraints & Liberations
by George Fendel, Jazz Society of Oregon

I can recall hearing a teenage Marriott sounding for all the world like Clifford Brown! As most musicians do, he's moved into other arenas, certainly finding his own voice, but it remains at times a silvery, gorgeous trumpet sound. On these seven originals, Marriott works little miraculous turns with tenor man Hans Teuber, and leaves lots of room for pianist Gary Versace and his rhythm section to create on their own terms. Marriott's... read more

John Stowell / Michael Zilber - Basement Blues
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

With a sound reminiscent of how it was with Oregon when they were transitioning from Elektra to ECM, this crew has the modern sweet spot well in hand where many things merge into a sound at once familiar but thoroughly it's own. A real treat for those that still remember how it was when you could make music in the marketplace that wasn't required to swing for the fences under a pile of notes. Hey, we know there's always been meddling executive... read more

Karrin Allyson - A Kiss for Brazil
by SUZANNE LORGE, The New York City Jazz Record

Karrin Allyson has long been a fan of singer-composer Rosa Passos (and vice versa), so when Passos was passing through New York in March 2023, Allyson took the opportunity to record with the Bahian legend. The two tracks they laid down then became the launching pad for A Kiss for Brazil (Origin), an album that encapsulates Allyson's decades-long appreciation for Brazilian music.

Of the album's ten songs, Allyson and Passos sing in duet on... read more

Benjamin Boone - The Poets Are Gathering
by Skip Heller, All About Jazz

BEST OF 2020 Saxophonist Benjamin Boone's The Poets Are Gathering (Origin) was maybe the most interesting new disc this year. Ever since Ken Nordine crossed swords with Chico Hamilton sideman Fred Katz to spawn the long-loved Word Jazz albums, the two disciplines have had mutual respect but an uneasy coexistence. Boone thrives on the uneasy, and here he is joined by eleven of the finest Central/Northern California poets for a... read more

Bruce Barth Trio - Dedication
by Josh Jackson, WRTI/WBGO Fall Jazz Preview 2022

Bruce Barth, who teaches at Temple University, is himself an earnest and dedicated student of the music. The pianist's understated manner has kept him a secret in plain view for decades. Look no further than Dedication, a collection of original material shaped for his trio with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Montez Coleman, whose recent, untimely death partly inspires the album's title. There are also bright tributes to McCoy Tyner and Tommy... read more
