After reviewing both of Hadley Caliman's previous two Origin Records releases, Gratitude and Straight Ahead, I felt that Hadley had many bright moments ahead of him. He had retired from teaching at Cornish College after 22 years of teaching, and was enjoying playing in Seattle, leading a small group as well as playing with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.
Gratitude was recorded in 2008, and Straight Ahead... read more
4 1/2 STARS On January 24 and 25, Studio5 will host Chicago's finest relatively unacknowledged baritone Paul Marinaro performing music from his recently-released double album, Mood Ellington (Origin Records). Marinaro's generally weak national recognition is a shame. While he tends to organize ambitious recording projects (such as 2023's The Bowie Project), Marinaro is always up to the task, and Mood Ellington is not... read more
Underpinning so much of Laurie Antonioli's approach to music is identifying the provenance and essence of dramatic character, 'mutant opera' if you will, which are not enacted but depend on perceptive rhetorical judgement within a fabric of rolling continuity. Her music may pay homage to forebears in scale, tone and technique but each one, especially revealed in this vibrant and questing new set, presses for fresh meaning with all the virtuoso... read more
4-STARS With his father Piet having been Jef Neve's bassist for many years, we suspect that Antwerp pianist Milan Verbist (26) was brought up with a love of jazz. It is therefore no surprise that the four covers he presents here include lesser-known works by Tomasz Stanko and Gary Peacock. He also has an affinity for classical music, as evidenced by J.S. Bach's 'Sarabande', which he transforms into a beautiful piece of jazz.
For his... read more
Crazy: The Music of Willie Nelson goes above and beyond the confines of mere adulation for an American music icon. Seattle-based trumpeter Thomas Marriott creates a conceptual sonic flow, harnessing energy from the melodic and rhythmic legacy of some of Nelson's well known and not-so-well-known gems. For the bulk of the session Marriott is supported by a stellar crew of like-minded risk takers, including saxophonist Mark Taylor,... read more
Dave Liebman pupil of the Mitch Paliga, records for more than twenty years, but released his first album until 2006. Which is to demonstrate the difficulties faced by professional musicians moving in a separate area which apart from the purely musical part, bear the burden of caring for themselves and for all the rest. From the cover and produce the CD, to play, promotion and distribution of natural and caring for the closure... read more
This album came about because Steve Million (a five-night-a-week working jazz pianist in Chicago) began studying classical music again. He says that the experience took him back to an early version of his playing, before he had committed himself to jazz. Remembering the Way Home is an attempt to capture the freshness of Million's first discoveries of music, filtered through the knowledge and skills he has since gained.
It works. This... read more
Bassist Chuck Deardorf has been a yeoman on the Seattle jazz scene for more than 25 years.
His muscular sound and Gibraltar-like time have been heard locally behind everyone from Abbey Lincoln and Chet Baker to Art Farmer and Mark Murphy. After spending a career in the shadows, Deardorf finally has stepped into the spotlight with an album under his own name.
Well, half-under, anyway. Ever the support player, Deardorf shares leadership... read more
