The Spin Quartet - In Circles
by Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

**** 4-STARS - 2014 has been a stellar year for jazz quartets working without chording instruments - two horns, bass drums, no piano, no guitar. Trumpeter Tom Harrell released the marvelous a very groove-based Trip (High Note Records); a somewhat old-timey sounding Riverside (Greenleaf Music), featuring trumpeter Dave Douglas; the smoldering and hypnotic The Lathe of Heaven (ECM Records) by the Mark Turner quartet.

Add to the list The... read more

EEA - The Dark
by Brad Walseth, JazzChicago.net

One may not suspect the existence of jazz in a place like Reno, Nevada, but I, for one, was aware that there was a scene present because I had relatives living there and spent time in this beautiful town-- a smaller-Las Vegas, but in a much lovelier location near Lake Tahoe and the Donner Pass into Northern California. My relatives lived in Sparks - where this album was recorded - and I have fond memories of some of the jazz music I saw while... read more

Eddie Allen and PUSH - The Rhythm
by Ted Panken, DownBeat Magazine

4-STARS The Rhythm is Eddie Allen's second release by Push, as the veteran trumpeter calls the septet he first documented in 2014 with slightly different personnel. Allen's nicely juxtaposed, well wrought compositions and arrangements proceed to a broad array of grooves representing the various genres to which he's contributed the full-bodied tone, fluid phrasing and consummate technique that have earned the Milwaukee native first-caller... read more

David Weiss Sextet - Auteur
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Trumpeter David Weiss has carved out a career playing with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, James Spaulding as well as currently teamed with the hard bop vets The Cookers. This album has that classic late period Blue Note feel, with Weiss leading a muscular group of Myron Walden/as, Nicole Glover/ts, David Bryant/p, Eric Wheeler/b and EJ Strickland/dr through an exciting mix of originals and covers.

Scenes - Variable Clouds: Live at the Earshot Jazz Festival
by Thomas Conrad, Stereophile Magazine

4-STARS If these four guys are not the best players in the Pacific Northwest on their respective instruments, they are all on very short lists. Scenes has made eight albums in the last 20 years. It was reduced to a trio, and remained so for most of its history, when one charter member, Rick Mandyck, had to take a 15-year break from playing the tenor saxophone due to health issues.

The news about Variable Clouds is that Mandyck is back... read more

Dick Reynolds - Music & Friends
by Ric Bang, Jazz Scan

I've not heard a real "dance band" for quite some time. This organization, headed by pianist Dick Reynolds, falls very nicely into that category.

In the 1960s, Reynolds was the house pianist at Mr. Kelly's Jazz Club, in Chicago; in that capacity, he worked with the likes of Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McCrea and many others. Reynolds subsequently started his own commercial endeavor (Com Track) in Chicago, where he wrote, filmed and... read more

Brittany Anjou - Enamigo Reciprokataj
by Elzy Kolb, Hot House Jazz Guide (NYC)

Pianist Brittany Anjou divides her time between her Brooklyn home and a long-term gig in Kuwait, where she teaches jazz theory and more to kids and adults. "The students are hungry for jazz, and want to understand theory. Any time I travel and play abroad, people are really listening, it's like you're valued more there," she says. "In Kuwait, the people are focused on the melody. At house concerts, people care in a different way" than in other... read more

Corey Christiansen - Lone Prairie
by Linda Yohn, WEMU

Is the guitar today's universal instrument? Actually, the voice is our first and most universal instrument, but the guitar could follow shortly behind it. In permutations from the oud to the cittern, zither, bouzouki and many others, portable stringed instruments are easy to transport and play while singing. These instruments including today's modern guitars are versatile in all styles of music.

This morning's 89.1 Jazz premiere, Lone... read more
