Dave Slonaker Big Band - Shifty Paradigms
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Classy modern big band charts are delivered by composer/arranger Dave Slonaker and his tgeam of LA All Stars. The sections are rich and wondrous throughout, hip as all get out around Tom Luer's tenor sax on "Dash Cam" while a "All Blues"y tilt on "Bye Bye Blues" goes 6/8 around Ron Stouts' Milesy trumpet. The brass goes into a rich fanfare on the declaratory "3rd and Four" while drummer Peter Erskine builds up the groove under Brian Scanlon's... read more

Josh Nelson - Exploring Mars
by Hobart Taylor, KUCI, Irvine, CA

A concept album that begins with a jazz bed under a reading from Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles" and continues with a variety of styles to evoke mental images and imaginings of the "red planet". I like the offbeat ballad "How I Loved You on Mars", the Metheny like "Sojourner","Memnonia Quadrangle", a guitar meditation, and "Spirit" A reprise of the first cut without the Bradbury narration and with a fine trumpet... read more

Alain Mallet - Mutt Slang II: A Wake of Sorrows Engulfed in Rage
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

The title and the cover art have you thinking this is probably some kind of edgy, malcontent stuff and nothing could be farther from the truth. A high octane jazzbo, Mallet mixmasters things in a way you don't expect but knows how to make the whole come out fully baked and ready to savor. Familiar and not so at the same time, his wide ranging range of pals deliver the goods under his watchful eye and a good time is had by all, including you.... read more

Bobby Broom - Song And Dance
by Tad Hendrickson, JazzWeek

THERE'S BEEN A school of thought since the '60s that jazzmen can groove and vamp their way through any modern pop song, keeping the accessibility but jazzifying it. Song And Dance is cut from that mold, opening with the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" and following it with a decent version of the fluffy classic "Where Is The Love." More interesting is Broom's take on the Little Rascals theme "Good Old Days," which I remember enough to know that... read more

Don Lanphere - Where Do You Start?
by Butch Berman, Berman Music Review

From the first notes you hear, you know it's Don. Those soft, lush compelling tones envelope you like stepping into a luxurious hot bath. Seductive, you almost have to sigh

Yeah, we're talkin' about Don Lanphere, one of my all-time most beloved jazz figures and one of the best friends that I've ever had in the jazz business that I've never met face to face (still keeping up our tradition, huh Don?) Anyway, this new CD is entitled "Where... read more

Richard Sussman - Continuum
by Jack Goodstein, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

For those of us unfamiliar with Richard Sussman, a glance at his website gives an insight into his background, but even a cursory listen to the Richard Sussman Quintet's Continuum, his recently released album on Origin, gives an even better indication of his artistry. A pianist and a professor of composition at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, he has worked with his share of A-list musicians, and as a leader has fronted on four... read more

Kelly Brand Nextet - The Door
by Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

One of the things I miss most about no longer living in the Chicago area is seeing and hearing groups like pianist Kelly Brand's Nextet, known only to a small number of enthusiasts in the immediate neighborhood but deserving a much wider audience. One of the musicians I miss most is trumpeter Art Davis, a bellwether of the ensemble who has long been an admirably resourceful improviser and one of the Windy City's unsung treasures.
