Accompanied only by Martin Wind's forthright bass lines, the singer sets her story-telling course with the imperishable 84-year-old "Exactly Like You." She and Wind are so convincing again in "I Wish You Love" that this listener found himself wishing for an entire album with just the two of them. However, Daniels is equally effective accompanying herself on piano and coloring "All The Way" with blues feeling as Wycliffe Gordon... read more
At the beginning of Bifrost, the sound from John Moulder and his half-American, half-Norwegian quintet is fairly exploratory, ambient. By the end of that first title track, though, the sound has developed into full electric guitar mania. Moulder has his way with his guitar, to say the least. Quickly going into the next piece, though, Moulder and the band morph into an early morning, introspective sound. It may sound an odd comparison, but from... read more
When it comes to more experimental records, there's a fine line between innovative and self-indulgent. Bassist Lincoln Grimes has successfully remained on the right side of the tracks. Along with a stable of legendary bassist guests — among them Victor Wooten and John Pattitucci — Goines looks to push the bass in fascinating directions without giving the listener more information than is necessary. Goines also has the good taste to step back... read more
A trip to the seventh galaxy for the Space X generation, the accent here is on interplay and vibe rather than exploration. Young lions that know how to play well together and focus on achieving lift off. Solid ensemble work that... read more
Benjamin Boone and Philip Levine's The Poetry of Jazz continues the extraordinary tradition of Charles Mingus and his iconic recordings A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry (Bethlehem, 1957) and Weary Blues (Polygram, 1958) with Langston Hughes the recordings of the great Oscar Brown Jr., such as Sin and Soul (Columbia, 1960) and those by Gil Scott-Heron Pieces of a Man (RCA, 1971) and Winter in America (Strata-East, 1974). Kikoski is a sideman on saxophonist Michael Zilber's Originals for the Originals, a tribute to seven of the leaders's favorite saxophonists (Michael Brecker, Sonny Rollins, Dave Liebman, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, John Coltrane and Paul Desmond) via wittily-titled originals hinting at their musical spirits.
It is an intriguing set, with Zilber sounding like some of his heroes and not like others. Uptempo "Breckerfast Club" and more somber... read more
4-STARS Upcoming saxophonist Roxy Coss opens her splendid Origin Records debut, Restless Idealism with a traditional approach on her original tune, "Don't Cross the Coss." It's a happy and assertive sound, and when she takes her first solo, her and robust tone bring Coleman Hawkins comes to mind. Coss and her band, churning along on a well-lubricated drive train of a terrific rhythm section, know how to open show - feet are tapping... read more
4 1/2 STARS I had to listen to this record for months before I could write about it. It's that different. Percussion solo records are an interesting breed, and this one doesn't remind me of anything.
Icasiano's percussiveness is all about the pacing and grouping of the beats. Clusters, clusters, driving and then receding, with crisscross patterns emerging from the maelstrom. Psychedelic. Disorienting. There is no "one," and while... read more
