A Kiss for Brazil is not Karrin Allyson's first incursion into Brazilian music. I would not need to list her previous albums here to convince you she truly has an affinity for the Brazilian songbook.
Karrin Allyson (1962, Great Bend, Kansas) does not shy away from singing in Portuguese or choosing a less obvious repertoire from the Brazilian songbook. Her 1999 From Paris to Rio album first caught my attention. The CD had several Bossa Nova... read more
Matt Jorgensen has created a profound moving work on Tattooed by Passion, his CD honoring his father-in-law, Dale Chisman, who was considered Colorado's most significant abstract painter for thirty years until his untimely death on August 29, 2008. Matt includes several photos of Dale's work in the liner notes, which give a clear indication of Chisman's talent.
What drew me into this CD was the wide variety of musical palettes that Jorgensen... read more
With a splendid sound orientation, the American pianist Bill Anschell offers a splendid album. His unexpected arabesques reveal a free and limitless structure of creation, a musical diversity brings together different bop-hard bop influences, and the touch of its counterpoints constructs superb exchanges between tonicity and lightness. He maintains sonic paradoxes, exploring an improvisation which offers a musical virtue of its innovative and... read more
We're not really fans of albums with more than one or two singers present so approached Behind The Voice, which has 5 featured singers plus vocodered effects from the leader the fine ex-Betty Carter drummer Clarence Penn, with a certain amount of caution. Recorded over a period of two years at a Brooklyn studio we expected the best vocal choice to come from Kurt Elling who is on a cover of Peter Gabriel's 'Come Talk to Me.'

Although German pianist - now Canada-based - Florian Hoefner has played at festivals throughout Europe, appeared on 10 previous recordings and toured extensively in the US and Canada, he's not as well known in Australia. This new album by his quartet, recorded in New York, features Australian bassist Sam Anning, with drummer Peter Kronreif and saxophonist Seamus Blake. These eight tracks display Hoefner's composing ability and his stunning... read more
[translated from Polish] The name Marc Bernstein, apart from concerts in 2012 and 2013 (ie 10.05.2013 at the Blue Note in Poznan) can be associated with such outstanding artists as Branford Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham and the famous Danish Klüvers Big Band (known even with the excellent album recorded with Mulgrew Miller, Grew's Tune, 2012). The list of famous musicians with which Bernstein has worked over the years is in... read more
Michael Dease's Found in Space: The Music of Gregg Hill is an impressive tribute to Hill's compositions, blending a rich mixture of jazz traditions with modern flair. Dease's trombone leads an extraordinary ensemble through a set of intricate pieces that playfully navigate between varying time signatures, showcasing both technical mastery and emotional depth. Each musician contributes uniquely, with standout performances from Rudresh Mahanthappa... read more
Trumpeter Jared Hall's new release, Hometown, is an engaging and assured album that successfully blends the warmth and lyricism of cool jazz without ever feeling complacent. Rooted in reflection but propelled by a modern sensibility, it's a record that values tone, interplay, and a collective spirit that runs through the whole recording.
Hall has spent years building his voice across diverse jazz scenes, from the Midwest to the... read more
