Laurie Antonioli - The Constant Passage of time
by Various - Hot Box Feature, Downbeat

HOT BOX FEATURE, May 2019

Combining her own compositions with a handful of rock tunes from the past 50 years, Antonioli and her sextet have crafted an album that invites the listener into questions about patriarchy and capital, and the ties that bind us as Americans. Her voice, tall, proud and unpretentious, deserves to be more widely heard.
- Giovanni Russonello

There's no denying the supple persuasiveness of Antonioli's... read more

Hadley Caliman - Straight Ahead
by David Franklin, Cadence

Hadley Caliman recorded with the likes of Gerald Wilson, Don Ellis, and Mongo Santamaria in the 1960s and with such folks as Hampton Hawes, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, and a raft of other Jazz and Pop stars, as well as his own groups, in the ?70s. But the 78-year-old tenorist did not make another record until his return to the studio for a CD under his own name in late 2007. Gratitude was well-received with Straight Ahead... read more

Triocity - I Believe In You
by Rick Anderson, CD Hotlist

Rick's Pick Jazz combos without chordal instruments are usually a tough sell for me, but since Jeff Campbell has long been one of my favorite bass players I decided to give this one a spin - and I'm very glad I did. The group consists of Campbell, saxophonist/clarinetist/flutist Charles Pillow, and drummer Rich Thompson, and on this album they play nothing but standards, showing their range by tackling American Songbook ballads... read more

Greg Yasinitsky - YAZZ Band: New Normal
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Greg Yasinitsky wrote and arranged all the music here, as well as plays every type of sax along with his rotating 10 piece band of hard swingers. The Tunes are all upbeat and muscular, with everyone getting a chance in the spotlight. The leader's tenor teams with Vern Sielert's trumpet on the pumping opener "GP" while a more romantic "Song For Laura" includes Teo Ciaverella's rich piano. David Jarvis supplies the backbeat for the bopping "Blues... read more

Anthony Branker and Word Play - Uppity
by Curtis Davenport, Jazz Inside Magazine

With a large percentage of jazz musicians being African-American, racial justice has long been a point of contention and frustration for them (us). This frustration has manifested itself in different ways. Many in the 50?s and 60?s aligned themselves with religious groups such as the Nation of Islam, which preached black self reliance and encouraged members to discard their ?slave names? in favor of names that they felt were closer to their... read more

Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott - Return of the East-West Trumpet Summit
by Raul DaGama, Latin Jazz Network

Frank Foster, in his autobiography tells of the time when he was invited on stage to play, at a time when he thought he was the bee's knees. He soon found out that Gene Ammons was also on stage with him and it didn't take Foster to find out who the real 'boss' was. That 'cutting' contest taught him a real lesson, not only in humility, but also in musicianship. The two trumpets on Return Of The East West Trumpet Summit are not in it to win... read more

John Bishop with Jeff Johnson, Rick Mandyck, John Stowell - Scenes
by Matt Collar, All Music Guide

AMG EXPERT REVIEW: Guitarist John Stowell joins the trio of bassist Jeff Johnson, drummer John Bishop, and tenor saxophonist Rick Mandyck on this mellow, intensely reflective recording. Stowell is an exceptional musician whose lyrical and nimble fret-work stands beside such other luminaries as Jim Hall and Bill Frissel. Having received many accolades in recent years, Scenes is a good example of why Stowell deserves even wider recognition. A... read more

Peter Lerner - Continuation
by Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Guitarist Peter Lerner hasn't reached Broom's level of recognition, but he surely has outdone himself with his newest release, Continuation (Origin Records). Though he sounds strong in solo passages, it's the band he leads and the strength of his compositions that make the deepest impression here. With pianist Willie Pickens playing a leonine role throughout the recording and Robert Irving III serving as producer, "Continuation"... read more
