Tim Davies Big Band - Dialmentia
by Ric Bang, The Davis Enterprise

You don't often encounter drummers who are also composers, arrangers and producers; Tim Davies is a member of that relatively small fraternity.

He also leads a really big band that usually features (according to his web site) "a mixture of jazz, hip-hop and death metal." It's certainly all of that. The cadre includes nine reeds, eight trumpets, four trombones, two guitarists, two bassists, two keyboardists - I assume these pairs split duties... read more

Scott Reeves Quintet - The Alchemist
by Thierry Docmac, Paris Move

This is an album that could be described as a "document", reflecting a brilliant performance produced in 2005 by the masterful Scott Reeves Quintet, with Russ Spiegel, Mike Holober, Howard Britz, Andy Watson, and Scott Reeves on Alto Bugle, Piston Alto Trombone and Electronics. This is a new concert by the Scott Reeves Quintet, particularly sophisticated, in which we find a particularly cozy atmosphere, that of the City College of New York.... read more

Jared Hall - Seen on the Scene
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Rich toned trumpeter Jared Hall mixes his own tunes with that of bop master composer Tadd Dameron with his team of Vincent Herring/as, John Hansen/p, Michael Glynn/b and Matt Jorgensen/dr. It's a good call to delve into the underrated Dameron songbook, with two takes of "If You Could See Me Now" featuring sublime conversations between Hall and Hansen. A Latinized "Mating Call" has Herring searing over the pulsations, and a read of the cinema... read more

Dee Daniels - Intimate Conversations
by Shaun Brady, Jazziz

Q&A

With a powerful four-octave voice that sounds as if it's been fermented in the blues, singer Dee Daniels has fronted big bands and symphony orchestras over the course of her 30-year career. But as the title implies, her new CD, Intimate Conversations, is a collection of deeply personal duo performances. Choosing songs with lyrics that are themselves conversational, Daniels engages with a roster of jazz luminaries that... read more

John Moulder - Trinity
by Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Sacred music does not typically unfold in gritty jazz clubs.

But considering that the headliner at the Green Mill over the weekend was a Catholic priest, the rarefied choice of material seemed thoroughly appropriate.

Though guitarist John Moulder has been performing and recording steadily here for the past couple of decades, he achieved an artistic high point in 2006 when he released "Trinity" (Origin Records). Like Duke Ellington's Sacred... read more

Dick Reynolds - Music & Friends
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

Long time Chicago jingle meister Reynolds always seemed to find the energy to step outside the domain he ruled and do other musical things. Whether trying to develop rock bands, being a high profile night club accompanist or keeping big band alive, Reynolds managed to find the time and money to do it. Here we find him going back into the recording studio after a 15 year lay off, rounding up a who?s who of Chicago jazz from various modes and... read more

John Stowell | Ulf Bandgren Quartet - Night Visitor
by Chris Lunn, Ancient Victorys

After the last issue covering Stowell with Liemban CD on soprano and interpreting Sydney Bechet tunes. Here, he teams up with another guitarist, Ulf Bandgren, plus the bass of Bruno Raeberg and drums by Austin McMahon. The compositions are by Stowell (3) and Ulf Bandgren (3) on guitars and Bruno Raeberg (4) on bass. Austin McMahon adds drums. Here, Swedish meets American composing, and the playing works very well! This is their second... read more

Chris Walden Big Band - No Bounds
by Fred Bouchard, Downbeat, December 2006

Arms-wide embraces and straightforward voicings mark the squeaky-clean but silky-smooth style of trumpeter and film and TV composer Walden. A cast of 60-plus with international guests wail these tight-as-a-cricket charts and take brisk solos. Tierney Sutton sings Peggy Lee straight-arrow on "People Will Say We're In Love" as trombonist Bob McChesney goes wild. The album features Walden's spacious, seamless charts, but offers few surprises:... read more
