5-STARS Steve Lacy, one of the great innovators of jazz, considered Sidney Bechet to be a genius, New York clarinettist David Krakauer repeatedly paid him a musical tribute, now Dave Liebman, who played in groups of the greatest jazz fans such as John Coltrane, Elvin Jones, and Miles Davis reaches for his compositions. In 2011, Liebman received the prestigious American award Master of Jazz, awarded to the most important jazzmen. When the... read more
It's a pity Pax Wallace will soon be leaving Seattle to take up residence in Europe. Luckily, the thirty-nine year old pianist/composer leaves us with some wonderful music representing much of his best work over the seventeen years that he has made Seattle his home.
Recorded in the autumn of last year, "Language Arts" offers ten tracks that cover the entire spectrum of Wallace's musical palette. Featuring top-notch musical contributors like... read more
Left leaning Latin jazz first stewed in Chicago and later brewed in Miami, Vega brings it back home to tear it up with Chicago locals that love riding the groove express. Tasty, high octane stuff that finds the sax man and his pals giving it their all and giving more than you'd expect. A winner throughout.... read more
Bad Luck - Four (ambient jazz, avant-garde jazz)
Man, what a great album to kick off the column with. The first of my two numerically-titled picks is also the most easily-labeled "jazz" album of all my selections from the past few months. This isn't meant as a knock against Bad Luck, the moniker of duo Neil Welch (saxophone, live electronics) and Christopher Icasiano (drums). I'm guilty of seeking out the most non-jazz jazz albums I can... read more
John Moulder has released a gem on Origin, entitled Trinity. This album is an excellent introduction to the man, the musician and the scholar. For those who do not know John Moulder, Father John, is an ordained priest at St. Gregory's in Chicago. He is a brilliant scholar, composer and artistic musician.
The compositions on this album reflect not only his brilliance as a composer and master improviser, but they give you an insight to his view... read more
You get a sense of where this music's going to go right away, and how tight these musicians are as a trio. The opener, "A Deeper Blue," is a medium-slow crawler that can expose any rough edges to a band's cohesion. The trio moves ever so gently off the soulful, bluesy head with the slightest restraint - riding on drummer Greg Rockingham's light, rolling snare- as they hesitate before diving in. Call it a measure of tightness, a lucky musical... read more
Pacific Northwest-based pianist and composer Clay Giberson grew up on a farm in Woodland, Washington. So, perhaps it's unsurprising that the University of Miami-trained musician would find inspiration in the fields of home. Like jazz composers Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Ornette Coleman, Giberson digs into the loamy soil of Americana for the raw materials on Pastures, his sixth recording as a leader for the Origin label. (His Upper... read more
Cross-pollination between jazz and pop music has become something of a mini-trend in the last few years, ranging from interesting fusions and covers on smaller labels up to a high-exposure Grammy for Herbie Hancock's renditions of Joni Mitchell songs. In the same vein, Los Angeles-based sax player Tom Luer reworks a handful of major hits into easygoing West Coast modern jazz on Project Popular. This is light, airy music fresh from the cafes more... read more
