***** (Five Stars)
As Bad Luck, Neil Welch (tenor saxophone & live electronics) and Chris Icasiano (drums) have played roughly 60 shows a year for over 10 years. Their latest CD out on Origin Records, Four, displays the mature, complex seamlessness which comes from two players who know what the other is about. Welch's dexterous chops atop his use of drone and chorus pedals (plus studio work by Randal Dunn) combine with Icasiano's tom-heavy... read more
**** 4-STARS - 2014 has been a stellar year for jazz quartets working without chording instruments - two horns, bass drums, no piano, no guitar. Trumpeter Tom Harrell released the marvelous a very groove-based Trip (High Note Records); a somewhat old-timey sounding Riverside (Greenleaf Music), featuring trumpeter Dave Douglas; the smoldering and hypnotic The Lathe of Heaven (ECM Records) by the Mark Turner quartet.

Oscar Peterson used to advise his students not to be afraid of the piano. Somehow, I don’t think it was piano they feared.
Listening to Marius Nordal’s "Notoriety" can be just as intimidating. Nordal’s technical mastery of the piano is immediately apparent, and his arrangements---he’s worked primarily as a composer---are highly original. To echo the words of Count Basie, Nordal plays "a whole lot of piano," and like... read more
Trombonist Doug Beavers delivers a mix of tasty originals and potent arrangements of familiar jazz works in his second Origin release. Rich horn charts and robust solos highlight his interpretation of Herbie Hancock's "Tell Me a Bedtime Story," with the use of electric piano and electric bass lightening the sound just a bit. He reharmonized Clare Fischer's Latin gem "Pensativa," putting much of the emphasis on the rich ensemble sections, though... read more
In early 2008, saxophonist and composer Geof Bradfield took on a month-long tour of Rwanda, Congo, Uganda, and Zimbabwe as part of pianist Ryan Cohan's quartet. The tour was arranged as a part of The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad, a unique program co-sponsored by the U.S. State Department and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Similar programs have taken place since the Cold War, with the U.S. government turning to the world of jazz to spread the... read more
Seattle-based Dawn Clement is an outstanding composer, arranger, pianist and vocalist. I make that assessment based on just this album.
She has played and recorded with several groups, including a previous release under her leadership, but this is my first exposure to her. My bad, in the words of today's youth.
Let's begin with her talen as a pianist: She's the most inventive, lyrical and swinging artist I've heard in years. Her covers of... read more
Whether it's for gigging with Joshua Redman, opening for Steely Dan, sessioning with Norah Jones or forging a new approach to the jazz organ, Sam Yahel deserves your notice. Find out what sets Yahel apart from other Hammond B-3 players and get his insights on why his just-released CD Truth And Beauty isn't just for jazz listeners.
Tell me about how you got to make music your profession and the organ your keyboard of choice.
For me... read more
Vancouver jazz vocalist Dee Daniels reworks pop songs from the past half-century on Jazzinit, a title designed to make the listener ask: "Does she mean Jazz in it, or Jazzin' it?"
The answer is both. She and her backing trio (Tony Foster on piano, Russ Botten on bass, Greg Williamson on drums) kick things off with a hard-swin rendition of the Earth Wind & Fire R&B number Can't Hide Love, making it sound like it was written for jazz quartet.... read more
