Pianist Gabriel Guerrero leads a team of Seth Trachy/sax, Will Slater/b, Felix LEcaros/dr ad guests Fun Chern Hwei/str and Guillermo Barron/perc through a collection of well constructed originals. There is a rich elegance to much of the work, with "Present Moment" including creative work by Slater, while the bassist digs in deep for the leader on "Belong". Hwei's strings agonize on "Permanent Diversion Part II" and Barron percolates under... read more
Chicago guitarist John Moulder has proven himself as versatile as he is virtuosic. He's served as producer on a handful of his own albums, and each has a strikingly different theme, purpose and array of musicians. Despite that, Moulder almost always inclines toward big picture concepts — something you could reasonably expect, given that he's spent much of his career holding a "day gig" as a Catholic minister.

4 1/2 STARS Trumpeter Thomas Marriott has established his jazz credentials over the years through a collection of beautifully inspired and well received albums on the Origin Records label. His formidable chops, extensive vocabulary, respect for tradition and penchant for musical adventurism has put him into the conversation concerning the top practitioners of his instrument in modern times. Zagreb Croatia native, pianist and composer Matija Dedic earned a collegiate degree from the Jazz Academy in Graz, Austria. Dedic comes from a musical family; his father received musical awards and his mom sang with Louis Armstrong and Phil Woods. Some of Dedic's piano teachers have included jazz stalwarts Hal Galper and Barry Harris. Among the musicians Dedic has played with are Benny Golson, Kenny Burrell, Roy Haynes, Alvin... read more

Pianist Hal Galper's overhauled piano approach, which he calls "rubato," is in full effect on his latest trio outing, Trip The Light Fantastic. Galper's partners, bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bishop, are perfectly suited for rubato playing, which involves stretching and manipulating tempo, form, harmony and meter. Melodies are often disguised and deconstructed, time and phrasing are morphed like... read more
For a decade now, the saxophonist and composer Benjamin Boone has successfully dedicated himself to combining works by contemporary poets with jazz compositions from his own pen. The collaboration with the award-winning poet Philip Levine in The Poetry of Jazz Volume Two (posthumous 2018) and The Poets Are Gathering (2020), both released by the Origin label, were particularly successful.
Now he is following up with an album... read more
Geof Bradfield's debut, Rule of Three, was widely praised in such places and by such critics as The New York Times' Ben Ratliff, Nate Dorward of Cadence Magazine, Downbeat, Howard Reichs in The Chicago Tribune, noted sax player and critic Jay Collins, and by many other media and reviewers. Though I haven't heard it, I believe them, based on the music contained in this spectacular disc. Working with a standard jazz quartet and pretty much... read more
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Oblivity, by Shawn Purcell, and it's intensively satisfying. Opening with title track, Oblivity, Shawn Purcell on guitar and Walt Weiskopf on tenor sax chisel out a really cool melody supported by Chris Ziemba on piano, Jeff Reed on bass and Steve Fidyk on drums. Weiskopf really rips a great sax solo, tightly punctuated by Ziemba on piano, then surrendering the lead to Ziemba who... read more
