Known for his work with musicians such as Wynton and Branford Marsalis, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Elvin Jones, Ari Brown, John Mellencamp, Ramsey Lewis or The Temptations - American trumpeter, composer and producer Pharez Whitted's new release is the fourth album branded under his own name.
Following the huge success of his previous album (''Transient Journey'', in 2010) - nominated for the prestigious Independent Music Awards in the... read more
Formerly a pianist with singer Betty Carter, Grant dipped for a while with Verve-Forecast into funk and worldbeat. Now a professor on the jazz faculty at Portland State, he offers here a lesson in how to interlace not just genres, but politics and music, in a way that's powerful rather than preachy. Working with a superb lineup--John Patitucci on bass, Brian Blade on drums, Bill Frisell and Adam Rogers on guitar, and Joe Locke on vibesGrant... read more
The esteemed Chicago guitarist John Moulder finds himself in the company of Richie Beirach (piano), Steve Rodby (acoustic bass) and Paul Wertico (drums), as the quartet offer us highly rich and melodic compositions that weave in and out of stunning textures that can swing playfully but are also often very soulful.
"Game Changer" starts the listen with Wertico's firm drumming as thick guitar from Moulder flows well with Beirach's warm keys,... read more
The strongest release in the series is however from our own Piet Verbist and his band ZYGOMATIK. Together with Herman Pardon (drs), Bram Weijters (frh, Wurlitzer), Jeroen Van Herzeele (ts, ss) and Vincent Brijs (bs), Piet presents with "Cattitude" an hour of strong jazz that emanates from all directions. The versatility and wealth are both in the compositions and in the skills of the musicians. The music switches effortless from pure New York... read more
Dave Glenn's 2009 release explores the intersection of two truly American creations: baseball and jazz. Glenn is clearly a gifted trombonist and composer, who after years of working in New York City now teaches jazz at Whitman College in Washington state. Those New York years saw him playing with Gerry Mulligan; Blood, Sweat, and Tears; and countless others. Fruitful musical collaborations resulted, too including the outstanding musicians... read more

4-STARS I don't typically incline towards funky R&B/ fusion music. See-sawing major chords, repeated licks, and hypnotic vamps are associated with long-road trips and exercise classes, neither optimal for serene aesthetic contemplation. All the more surprising that this over-the-top boisterous funk outing swept away my misgivings about the genre on the strength of its freshness and musical candor.
The tunes are all written by Corey... read more
What is the Wellstone Conspiracy? For some political intrigue junkies it alludes to the 2002 death of liberal Senator Paul Wellstone who perished in a small plane crash which some pundits believe was caused by an assassination scheme. For Pacific Northwest jazz fans, however, Wellstone Conspiracy is a skilled quartet which formed in 2006 to back up Idaho-based soprano saxophonist Brent Jensen. The musicians were last heard together on Jensen's... read more
