Josh Nelson - The Sky Remains
by Rigobert Dittmann, Bad Alchemy (Germany)

Chad McCullough & Bram Weijters - Abstract Quantities
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

It's kind of funny to think in these terms but this crew has been around so long that emusic used to sing their praises. I mean it's funny to think that's so long ago but nanoseconds count in particle world. But the music? Emusic was right then and if they were still around, they'd be right today. This bunch continues to grow, thrive and feed off each others vibes and energy in fine style. Playing with the spirit of a crew like... read more

Anthony Branker & Other Ways of Knowing - Manifestations of a Diasporic Groove & Spirit
by Thierry De Clemensat, Paris Move

5-STARS To write about Anthony Branker is to risk superlatives. And yet restraint feels almost dishonest. He stands, more than likely, among the most important and influential American composers working today, not simply because of the sophistication of his craft, but because of the intellectual and moral architecture that sustains it. Once again, Branker delivers a work that is forceful, searching, at moments even unsettled, a score... read more

Jared Hall - Influences
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

This album by trumpeter Jared Hall is a fun one in that you get to guess by the tone and styles (not to mention the titles) of each song which fellow horn man he's giving tribute to. Along with Tal Cohen/p, Michael Glynn/b and John Bishop/p, he composes pieces with a tip of the cap to artists like Brian Lynch ("Professor B.L.) and Wallace Roney ("One For Wallace") with ideas of blue and lyricism respectively. The clever stop start of "Song For... read more

Scenes - ...But Not Heard
by George Fendel, Jazz Society of Oregon

Students of jazz are always told to listen to everyone, borrow what inspires them, but give it back eventually. Because their most important assignment is to find a voice of their own. Many flattering things can be said of Portland guitarist John Stowell. And one of them is that he is very much his own man in a highly creative musical sense. He even holds the guitar like nobody else! On this CD, Stowell is reunited with his Seattle playing mates... read more

Mamutrio - Primal Existence
by Claude Loxhay, Jazz Halo - Belgium (French)

The sax-bass-drum trio is not a rare grouping, mostly with tenor saxophones (Sonny Rollins, Gratitude Trio by Jeroen van Herzeele) but there are exceptions such as the trio Renku by Michaël Attias with alto sax, or this Mamutrio .

This formula "without net" requires a perfect involvement of the rhythmic pair: everyone must be able to be a soloist in his turn. This is the case of Mamutrio.

Along with Jesse Dockx, a 19-year-old drummer... read more

Sarah Partridge - Bright Lights and Promises: Redefining Janis Ian
by Neil Tesser, Jazziz

When Janis Ian arrived in the 1960s as a teenaged singer-songwriter armed with an acoustic guitar, no one would have confused her with a jazz singer. She did have a precociously mature social consciousness--her first hit, "Society's Child," dealt with the establishment's disdain for interracial romance--and her biggest single, the chart-topping "At Seventeen," boasted a bossa nova beat and enough melodic content to elicit a cover from iconic bop... read more

Gabriel Guerrero & Quantum - Equilibrio
by Andy Harrison, Arts Axis Florida

4-STARS Gabriel Guerrero, a Colombian-born and NYC-based pianist, composer and educator has given us eleven charming and silky-smooth tracks to enjoy on his new record Equilibrio--while at times verging on the inoffensive and anodyne, Guerrero and his band QUΔΠTUM provide enough energy to keep listeners engaged with their particular brand of high-end jazz.

While you can hear a bit of hard-bop inflections in their playing, they've... read more
