Jessica Williams - The Art of the Piano
by Dan McClenaghan, All About jazz

Pianist Jessica Williams' third Origin Records CD, The Art of the Piano, brings to mind Brad Mehldau's Art of the Trio series that ran through five discs. In Mehldau's case the recordings were, of course, with his trio, featuring bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy (later, Jeff Ballard). Williams' three sets on Origin are all solo efforts, and they are all marvelous explorations of the pianist's singular artistry.

David Weiss Sextet - Auteur
by Lance Liddle, BeBop Spoken Here (UK)

There have been a lot of excellent albums dished up for review this year and already the contenders for Album of the Year are amassing.

Auteur is one guaranteed to be in the shake-up. It's the kind of music I had in mind when I first started blogging all those years ago - bop, hard bop, post bop and beyond (albeit not too far beyond).

In his notes, Weiss states that, just like in politics, jazz has no middle anymore. adding that, unlike... read more

John Stowell | Michael Zilber - Live Beauty
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

A live date recorded at the end of a two week tour, the crew on board here developed the mental telepathy that it takes to make an improv date feel like it's been well scripted to sound like the notes have been well laid out but the players are given the freedom to play around them. Not a hooting an hollering set, it's about low key fire and intensity. This is sitting down jazz played by real pros that know how to hold you in rapt... read more

Bobby Broom - The Way I Play: Live In Chicago
by Josef Woodard, Jazziz

Count Bobby Broom as one of those jazz greats hiding in very plain sight. The nimble and continually inventive guitarist has, for years, played regularly on the uppermost echelon of jazz stages, as part of Sonny Rollins' band. On his own, though, Broom remains relatively low-key. While Rollins' audience tend to patiently await each sax solo, his bandmates are well worth hearing themselves, from the innately tasteful trombonist Clifton Anderson... read more

Jessica Williams - The Art of the Piano
by -Chris Robinson, Earshot Jazz

College sports reporters, analysts and commentators (especially those on the West Coast) describe what they believe to be an East Coast bias when it comes to team rankings. The same can be said for the lack of national recognition of some of Seattle's ? and arguably the nation's ? best jazz artists. I dare you: just try and find any Seattle artists (save for Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz and recent NYC transplant Tom Varner) listed in JazzTimes'... read more

Ben Thomas Tango Project - Eternal Aporia
by Angela Ballhorn, Jazz 'N' More (Switzerland)

4-STARS Sometimes life takes strange paths. 15 years ago, Ben Thomas would not have thought that his passion for tango dancing and the resulting interest in this music would lead him to this project. Thomas sets melodies and rhythms in his compositions on both the vibraphone and the bandoneon, his colleagues on the violin and clarinet play along magically, while the bass is responsible for the clear rhythmic accents. All elements of... read more

Hal Galper / Jeff Johnson / John Bishop - Furious Rubato
by Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

In the liner notes that he wrote for his 2006 session Furious Rubato, Hal Galper discusses the style of playing known as rubato and explains why it interests him so much. The veteran acoustic pianist has a lot to say on the subject of rubato (which, as the website Wikipedia points out, has been used by everyone from Frederic Chopin to Megadeth), but Galper (who turned 68 in 2006) really gets to the essence of this post-bop album when he speaks... read more

Brad Wheeler - The Future Was Yesterday
by Nathan Holaway, Jazz Review

Brad Wheeler better have a huge appetite because the world is definitely his oyster. Not only is Wheeler an ace saxophonist, but a great contemporary and progressive composer. He is one of the shining voices for the future, who is insurmountably steeped in the traditions of the past. The listener can hear faint echoes of Coltrane and Shorter, as well as contemporary traces to Brecker, Liebman, and even Steve Lacy.

Wheeler's backing band is... read more
