Dialmentia began a bit aggressively for my taste--collective finger-snapping, loud drums, and shouting brass--no matter how much I turned the volume down, this band still seemed too huge. Passages on the CD ("Hanging by a Thread" for one) were more serene, but Davies still seems intrigues by sheer sonic force. His shouting "Caravan (-dalized)" will appeal to people who like Swing Era originals modernized, and this result is far better than its... read more
This CD is quite an education. There's power in music of one's homeland. Somehow, it transcends all opinions, criticisms, language and cultural limitations.
Vasilic Nenad and his Balkan Band give us an "ear" view into his culture. These folk songs are all native to the former Yugoslavia (Balkans). The jazz interpretation is something else. Collectively, the musicians show their love and share it with you, the listener.

Delia Fischer, 60 years old with a 40 year career, has an outlier trajectory. A pianist by training, she soon embarked on an instrumental path. Later, she arrived at musical theater. She worked a lot, but there was professional dissatisfaction in the air. This issue was only resolved when she started singing her own songs, which effectively happened in 2010, with "Presente", her second solo album.
The recently released "Delia Fischer Beyond... read more
After plenty of time spent in small-group formats (including the short-lived Monk's Dream trio with piano and organ together), Chicago pianist Steve Million took the opportunity to make his first solo piano recording. Interestingly, instead of his previous influences in Monk and others, Million makes use of a more recent foray into classical music as a seed for creation here. All the works are original compositions from Million (with the... read more
Alto sax player Alex Graham's album Brand New attempts to live up to its own title largely by reworking classic pieces (and a few less-common items in the jazz world) into a new form for an interesting sextet combination. The album opens with a piece from the Stylistics that is just this side of recognizable. An original blues club number from Graham follows, as well as a couple of interesting arrangements of old songbook classics. An Isley... read more
Educator, clinician, and A-one alto sax player, Brent Jensen honors one of the most self-effacing musicians in the history of jazz, Paul Desmond. The title comes from Desmond's ambition to "sound like a dry martini," probably very light on the vermouth. There are many "Desmond-isms" that he liked to use to describe his work. On the secret to his unique tone, he said "I honestly don't know! It has something to do with the fact that I play... read more
Pianist Jessica Williams produces for the piano in With Love that Rebecca Parris and Beat Kaestli do in jazz vocals...a perfect jazz ballads recording. Williams does so in a solo piano setting not unlike what she has used in the past most recently on Song of the Earth (Origin, 2012), Touch (Origin, 2010) and The Art of the Piano (Origin, 2009). This is a recording the eclipses the majority of what passes for... read more
Guitarist/vocalist Bobby Rozario comes across like a musical metaphysician on this album of sonic spiritual themes. The music would be described as "world", but the message is "spirit" as Rozario seems to have imbibed the guitar style and passion of Carlos Santana and melded it with his own street preaching. He brings in a roster of vocalists to convey his message, including Carlton Jumel Smith, Keith Fluitt, John James with a rotating team of... read more
