Tom Collier - Impulsive Illuminations
by Hobart Taylor, KUCI - Irvine, CA

Not for the inattentive listener, this deeply engrossing music composed by vibraphone/marimba player Collier treads the ground of "pure", non-generic music. This music could be at home in a symphonic concert hall, a jazz night club, an electronic music seminar, or a Zen Center. Collier and his renowned colleagues, (Bill Frisell, guitar, Cuong Vu, trumpet, etc) stay gloriously true to their abstractions and improvisations.... read more

Jeff Johnson - My Heart
by Georges Tonla Briquet, Jazz'halo (Belgium)

Lost Recordings.... A "live" recording dating back to December 4, 1991 when tenor saxophonist John Gross, pianist Art Resnick, drummer Billy Mintz and bassist Jeff Johnson got to work together at Falcon Studios in Portland, Oregon.

On the program all compositions by Johnson ranging from razor-sharp bop with solos by the four musicians ('Linden Station') to ballads with jagged corners ('Leviathan'), mid-tempo swing... read more

Mattias Svensson - Embrace
by Dee Dee McNeil, Making A Scene

Swedish bassist, Mattias Svensson, first met pianist Bill Mays when they recorded in a Japanese studio in 2009. It was Svensson's debut trio recording. This inspired them to work together in the future. They toured together and planned to record more awesome music. Mattias assembled this session in Copenhagen with Mays and drummer Morten Lund, his longtime trio mate with the famed Jan Lundgren Trio.

Their opening tune is "My Toots Toots... read more

Milan Verbist Trio - Time Change
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

Milan Verbist, Toon Rumen and Jens Meijer come together for this debut recording that showcases their inimitable chemistry with 9 adventurous jazz tracks.

"Time Change" leads with Verbist's dense keys that eventually take company from Meijer's restrained drums and Rumen's unpredictable bass, and "Bosonossa" follows with playful bass plucking amid the firm keys and crisp drumming.

"Happy House" and "Brigitte's Waltz" occupy the middle... read more

Dave Liebman | John Stowell - Petite Fleur: The Music of Sidney Bechet
by Dan Bilawsky, JazzEd

Sidney Bechet is rightly hailed as one of the seminal figures of this music, putting his stamp on the NOLA clarinet tradition shortly after its dawn, codifying and expanding the soloist's language through his early recordings, and blazing a trail on soprano saxophone. But he was also a fine melodist, a fact which is often overlooked when his accomplishments are considered, weighed, and packaged for historical use. With this engaging duo date,... read more

Allison Adams Tucker - WANDERlust
by Scott Yanow, Downbeat

****
A powerful singer with an attractive voice, Allison Adams Tucker has always been interested in different languages and cultures. The San Diego-based vocalist has visited more than 15 countries in her life thus far, and she has clearly learned a great deal from the experiences. On WANDERlust, her third album, she celebrates not only the music of diverse regions, but also the concept of embracing the... read more

Steve Korn - Here and Now
by Dave Nathan, All Music Guide

A drummer who is a leader has to be aware not to take advantage of his position by overwhelming his fellow players and listeners with long, non-directional solos, yet at the same time let it be known that this is, in fact, his or her album, often a difficult balance to achieve. Steve Korn handles this problem very nicely by not letting it become a problem. He has gathered a roster of top-flight musicians from the Northwest region, including two... read more

Geof Bradfield - Our Roots
by Brian Zimmerman, Downbeat

EDITOR'S PICK The idea for saxophonist Geof Bradfield's intrepid new album Our Roots sprang from a concert series in Chicago called the Fulton Street Jazz Record Art Collective, in which musicians perform a classic jazz album in its entirety. Since its inception, visiting artists have covered works by all the usual suspects - John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Max Roach - but when it was Bradfield's turn, the Houston-born... read more
