The bass ace leads his piano trio through a tight, solid set that leaves plenty to the imagination but leaves no room for mucking around. On point as only an experienced pro can be, this atmospheric set takes you to the lighter side where it seems only natural a cocktail should be in your hand at sunset. Breezy and airy, the trio commands the sunny side of life with great style. A winner... read more
I had heard comments to the effect that this particular compact disc was confirming Kim Richmond's place as the new Stan Kenton. With this thought in mind and remembering seeing and hearing the concert jazz orchestra in concert, and on the debut CD, I played the disc for the first time. I must admit that I wanted to hear the Kim Richmond I knew. This meant the music should be eloquent, cliche free, teasing me with gorgeous lyrical lines, complex... read more
#5 ? Bobby Broom Plays For Monk (Origin). Now that Bobby Broom is back on the road with Sonny Rollins (who first tried to hire him when the guitarist was still in his teens), the rest of the world has the chance to catch up on what Chicagoans have known since the 80s: Broom has one of the few truly recognizable styles among modern guitarists, and one of the most satisfying solo concepts in mainstream jazz. In his improvising, Broom has a... read more
The Northwest U.S. in general, and Seattle in particular, simply teems with outstanding jazz artists. Now comes vocalist Lynn Bush with her warm, contemporary approach to a play list of mostly familiar material. Bush and her confreres have turned out an album in which they share, in almost equal parts, the time allocated for this album to make each song their own. Marc Seales on piano, when relieved of the responsibility of providing understated... read more
Resonance is an excellent title for this unique CD by John Stowell. It was recorded in Portland, Oregon, between 2003 and 2004 at luthier Mike Doolin's home studio. All of the guitars were designed and built by Mike.
John's style and his complete control of the tone and timber of the guitar, his master of dynamics, and the wonderful guitars that Mike Doolin has provided, make this set resonate with joy and love.
Opening with an... read more
Recorded two years after his Origin Records debut Individuation, Marriott is back with his second Origin release, Both Sides of the Fence. What stands out about this release is the song selection, a mixture of three Marriott originals along with an impeccably well chosen six other tunes by such artists as Ellington, Corea, and Hubbard. Recorded in Seattle, with noted local players, with the addition of two special guests - present day Seattle... read more
Day Of Reckoning is Dan Zinn's fifth album as a leader and lead it he certainly does. The reedist is very much at the forefront of this music, the band patter for his play. There's a buoyancy to the music here, floating along with ease, the players seemingly having a good time. Most performances, though, are just warm, never scalding hot.
"Continental Divide" gets enjoyably wild early on, until the tune shifts into a simpler gear, coasting... read more
I always like to listen to records by composers and arrangers that don't play any instruments on their records. Anthony Branker is a composer and an arranger, and the musical director of Songs My Mom Liked. Branker has put together the perfect cast of musicians to play his music. The stars of the cast are saxophonist Donny McCaslin, pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist Linda May Han Oh, guitarist Pete McCann, and drummer Rudy Royston. But the entire... read more
