David Sills - Down The Line
by George Fendel, Jazz Scene

Hooray for David Sills for a few reasons. He opts for a tenor sound which is rich and righteous AND on this recording, he includes two of the world's greatest players in Alan Broadbent, piano and Gary Foster, alto sax. If you haven't heard them, pick up this CD. I promise you'll be mesmerized. To the rhythm section, add Larry Koonse, guitar; Putter Smith, bass and Tim Pleasant, drums. That all makes for an outstanding aggregation. But back... read more

Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra - Without a Trace
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

Reeves makes his mark early with the opening track giving "Speak Low" a Latin edge that let's you know he rounded up the gang for some hot playing and creative moves. Whether original or cover, leading or playing, Reeves is the man with the plan. Tasty, straight up jazz by a crew that loves to play it right and tight, this is a killer date throughout that never met a false note. A desert with no empty calories, this is a must to lodge on the... read more

Arthur Kell Speculation Quartet - Live at LunÀtico
by Dick Metcalf, Contemporary Fusion Reviews

Exciting eclectic jazz Arthur Kell Speculation Quartet - LIVE AT LUNÀTICO: Bassist Kell's upcoming release (17 November, 2023) is certainly among the best of the exciting eclectic jazz albums we've had the pleasure to review (yet) in 2023... first, here's a short clip of the group performing together...

In addition to Arthur's brilliant bass work, you'll hear Brad Shepik - guitar; Nate Radley - guitar and Allan Mednard - drums...... read more

Piet Verbist - Suite Réunion
by Tom Greenland, The New York City Jazz Record

Bassists aren't always the most extroverted members of an ensemble, so it's always intriguing to hear what they'll choose to present given the reins of leadership. German Holger Scheidt, Belgian Piet Verbist and Dane Morten Haxholm each reveal a bit of themselves in the way they handle these reins:

Antwerp-based Verbist surely falls on the 'team player' end of the bassist-as-leader personality spectrum, favoring a big round sound, eschewing... read more

Chuck Owen & ReSurgence - Magic Light
by Michael van Gee, Jazz'N'More (Switzerland)

4-STARS Chuck Owen is particularly well-known as the leader of his big band Jazz Surge. Here he leads ReSurgence, a sextet or septet with a very special line-up. On two tracks, a wind ensemble with trumpet, trombone and alto saxophone also joins the core line-up. With the exception of the originally arranged "Spinning Wheel" by the band Blood, Sweat & Tears, which begins in the New Orleans style but swings wonderfully in the tenor... read more

Deep Blue Organ Trio - Folk Music
by Dr. Judith Schlesinger, All About Jazz.com

With the first two bars of Folk Music, you can tell that things are going to get greasy. Few people want greasy hair or greasy food, but greasy music is a whole other story: it means soulful and swinging and played with the kind of laid-back confidence that signifies true mastery. "Blues is the preacher, jazz is the teacher," says the group's website. This approach is one reason this CD is a pleasure from beginning to end.

Another is the... read more

Brad Goode - The Unknown
by Rick Anderson, CD Hotlist

As regular readers know, my strong preference in jazz is for the straight-ahead and swinging, and I particularly tend not to gravitate towards funk- or progressive jazz. Nothing against those styles, they just don't generally speak to me. But this album by trumpeter and composer Brad Goode really connected for me — in part because his funkiness is crunchy and complex rather than poppy, in part because his tone is exquisite, and in part because... read more

John Stowell / Michael Zilber - Basement Blues
by Robert Rusch, Cadence

I remember JOHN STOWELL [g] from the mid '70s when he made a series of rather ethereal recordings. Over the years he seems to have tempered that sound. His latest pairs him up once more with his long time associate, MICHAEL ZILBER [sax/p]. BASEMENT BLUES [Origin 82717] is with the quartet [John Shifflettb, Jason Lewis drm] recorded 3/12 and 3/15. The program here is made up of 8 originals plus one Jerome Kern [Nobody Else But Me] and one... read more
