Also on Origin is Matt Jorgensen +451, one of the most impressive live jazz bands in this region, with the potential to impress far afield. Their live performances are at times stunning -- supertight and driving. On disc, as live, the quartet has great confidence. Listening to them, you really do believe that there is every reason why their sound is arrayed their way, which, when you think about it, is a most curious thing.

A real beauty! A nice bit of modern jazz that manages to adhere to the form without ever really trying to reach it in conventional fashion. It flirts with the avant-garde while still maintaining a solid sense of groove and melody. Trumpeter Josh D. Reed had a gorgeous tone with the flow of Freddie Hubbard. Peter Epstein's sax is the ideal foil as it weaves in and out of the melody. Adam Benjamin's keyboards are steady rhythmically and highly... read more
Twopool is an experimental quartet led by cellist/bassist Jonas Tauber with fellow Swiss musicians Andreas Tschopp on trombone, alto saxophonist Andrea Oswald and drummer Christian Wolfarth. Their disc Traffic Bins, part of Origin Records' Zrich Series, consists of thirteen tracks of completely improvised musical conversations.
Amid the clang and clatter emerge sensible developments of theme and rhythm, basking momentarily in thick tension... read more
Scott Burns comes out of Dexter mainly, playing late bop and swinging fiercely on Passages. He's got a nice deep tone and some fleet fingers, but he is always melodic and telling a story, not just honking over some Blues riffs. The trio is very nice behind him, and in particular Ron Perrillo is accomplished, with a bit of Silver in his veins, but he always knows how to get out of the way and let Burns steal the show. The compositions, all of... read more
Throughout his five decades in jazz, bassist Harvie S has grown from a solid, swinging timekeeper into a musician who has earned his place in the foreground. Like his key inspiration, Bill Evans's early bassist Scott LaFaro, he has turned the bass into a melodic instrument, full of expressive possibilities. He colors his sweet tone with slides, growls, wit and drama, while phrasing like a singer: a flair he absorbed, no doubt, from his long duo... read more
5-STARS "The Color Of Angels" by the sextet of trombonist, composer and arranger Doug Scarborough presents a collection of new compositions that fuse Western music with traditional Middle Eastern music. The famous trombonist Bill Watrous describes the album as "some of the most interesting, original music coming from anybody in a long long time". Scarborough teaches at Whitman College in Walla Walla (Washington) and has been working for... read more
As someone who has been a fan of poet Philip Levine (1928-2015) for over three decades, when the album "The Poetry of Jazz" (Origin Records) arrived in the mail in early March of this year, I was thrilled. This collaboration with alto saxophonist and composer Benjamin Boone began in 2010 when Boone met the poet on the campus of Fresno State University in California. Levine was a "jazz poet" throughout his career, his collections peppered with... read more
